HELOISE NIE program uses newspapers in classrooms

Dear Readers: In a recent column, I mentioned the Newspapers in Education program that I support, along with many others who do so across the country. I shared some hints from students in the seventh grade at Tamarac Middle School in Troy, N.Y. These students use the newspapers in classroom studies, and some have sent me hints of their own through the years. Here are a few more. Heloise
P.S. Their wonderful teacher, Linda Dagle, has been using the newspapers since 1994, when I first started sponsoring the program at her school. You can help, too -- just call your newspaper and sign up.
Dear Heloise: I have a very interesting idea for remembering and planning your day.
I keep a notebook and a pen next to my bed. When I go to bed and cannot sleep, I start to think. Sometimes I remember things I want to do the next day, and they pop into my head, so I write them down.
So, the next time you are awake in bed and remember something, write it down in your notebook. Ben Clemente, age 12, grade 7
Dear Heloise: I have found that it is easier to get out of bed in the morning if you put your alarm clock at the foot of your bed. You will have to get up to turn it off. Amanda Hadsell, age 12, grade 7
Dear Heloise: This hint is for all the people out there who have dogs. When you play fetch with your dog, the ball gets wet and slimy. You don't want to pick it up. Well, put on any kind of glove. Then you can pick up the ball without getting your hand wet and slimy. Amanda Konieczny, age 11, grade 7
Dear Heloise: If you are always forgetting your homework, here is a quick tip for you:
First of all, you should get an assignment notebook. As soon as your homework is assigned, write it down! If you know you will need a book, notebook, binder or folder, write that down, too. Mary Downey, age 12, grade 7
Dear Heloise: I have an idea for you if you are trying to potty-train a puppy. I have a puppy, and he doesn't know any better than to do his business anywhere. So, what we are doing is every time the dog does his business outside, we give him a treat and praise him. He will soon understand how to handle himself. Kayla Sandercox, age 14, grade 7
Dear Heloise: In my kitchen, I organize my baking utensils in one cabinet so that when I am cooking, it is all there, and I don't have to run around in circles looking for stuff. It also makes it easier to put things away. I put the key ingredients where I can reach them, because I am small in size. Matthew Grab, age 12, grade 7
