DIVISION II Ursuline grads sparked Mercyhurst
Mercyhurst (5-6) had 11 area players on the roster.
ERIE, Pa. -- Two Ursuline High graduates -- Justin Adams and Simon Arias -- were standouts for the Mercyhurst College football team this year, headlining a group of 11 Youngstown-area players on the roster.
Adams, a junior tailback, led the team in rushing with 606 net yards in 177 carries and five touchdowns although he missed three of the 11 games (5-6 record) because of injury.
He also had 10 pass catches (for 50 yards) to rank No. 5 on the team, and returned four kickoffs for 41 yards.
Adams ranked No. 2 in all-purpose yards with 697 yards for an 87.1-yard average.
Arias, a sophomore strong safety, played in 11 games and was the team's second-leading tackler with 54 total stops, including 45 solos.
He also three tackles for losses, two interceptions, four pass breakups and one fumble recovery, and returned two kickoffs for 21 yards.
Jim Schuler punter
Another regular was punter Jim Schuler from Springfield, who played in 11 games punted all 76 times for a 38.9-yard average.
Schuler also was a backup quarterback and completed 8-for-28 passing for 96 yards with one interception.
Two other contributors were Neil Harris, freshman defensive back from Poland High, and William Shealey, a junior defensive back from Howland, who both played in 11 games.
Harris registered 21.5 tackles on 20 solos and three assists, while Shealey had 14.5 tackles on 14 solos and one assist.
Also in all 1l contests was Marcus Patton, a sophomore defensive back from Chaney who played in 11 games and had eight tackles, including five solos.
Others on roster
Rounding out the Youngstown-area delegation are: Rashad Davis, junior wide receiver from Liberty; Jared Work, a junior fullback-tight, and Jon Jenkins, sophomore tailback, both from Columbiana; Dan Schuler, freshman free safety from Springfield; and Gary Smith, a freshman offensive lineman from West Branch.
Davis played in four games and caught two passes for 50 yards, while Work was in 10 games and caught one pass for 22 yards, and Jenkins got in four games and had 2 net yards rushing in six attempts.
Dan Schuler played in nine games and had two solo tackles, and he also caught a pass for 22 yards.
