PITTSBURGH Some Steelers have individual goals to meet
Antwaan Randle El wants a third punt return TD.
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Four would seem to be a relatively modest number to represent an NFL regular season record. It's a number Antwaan Randle El won't be satisfied unless he reaches, and he thinks he can do it this season.
No NFL player has more than four kick return touchdowns in a season -- not even Kansas City's Dante Hall, who tied the record earlier this season with two punt return touchdowns and two on kickoff returns. Randle El is convinced he can get the two scores he needs to tie the record in the Steelers' final three games.
Good yardage
Randle El had a couple of chances during Pittsburgh's 27-7 victory Sunday over Oakland, but settled for setting up nearly all the Steelers' scoring with five punt returns for 132 yards, three catches for 48 yards and 225 all-purpose yards.
Randle El might have gotten a league-high third punt return touchdown, but Oakland's Tim Johnson yanked him down by the face mask at the Raiders' 19-yard line following a 51-yard return. Randle El also had a 39-yard punt return called back by a penalty.
"It was a big day because the punter they have [Shane Lechler] likes to kill the ball," Randle El said. "He kicks it deep so it's easier for you to set up your blocks. If you make one or two guys miss, you really have a chance to return the ball."
The Steelers (5-8) haven't had many things to celebrate while losing seven of their last 10, but Randle El's emergence as one of the NFL's most dangerous kick returners is among them.
Randle El has three punt return touchdowns in 15 games, dating to last season's playoffs, and had another called back by penalty. He is sixth in the league with a 12.2 average -- Hall leads at 18.3 -- and he and Hall have combined for four of the NFL's 12 punt return touchdowns this season. Randle El also has 309 yards on 29 catches.
When Randle El broke into the NFL last season after playing quarterback at Indiana, he was a raw talent adjusting not just to a higher level of play, but a new position at wide receiver.
Big man on campus
That didn't prevent him from repeatedly showing flashes of the ability that allowed him to become the only Division I-A player to throw for 6,000 yards and run for 3,000 yards in a career. He also is the only player to pass for at least 40 touchdowns and run for 40.
As a rookie, he was third on the team with 47 catches for 489 yards and two touchdowns and averaged 6.9 yards on punt returns. He has nearly doubled that average this season, mostly because he now understands that kick returning requires more than raw speed and quickness.
"I've learned to set up my blocks rather than just running," Randle El said.
Only Hall (440 yards) has more punt return yardage than Randle El (428 yards), though Randle El has 11 more returns. Teams have begun kicking away from Hall rather than risk putting the ball in his hands.
