Man reports e-mail scam
CANFIELD -- A 35-year-old Canfield man reported to police that an e-mail that he thought was from eBay persuaded him to give out his Social Security number, banking account numbers and credit card numbers.
The man said he received an e-mail Saturday telling him that someone had attempted to use his eBay account and instructing him to verify personal information on a Web site provided in the e-mail, police reports show. At the site, he was asked to reveal the information.
When the man contacted eBay via telephone, the company told him they had not sent the e-mail and instructed him to close accounts and take other precautions.
Austintown house fire
AUSTINTOWN -- A blaze caused about $60,000 damage to a two-story home at 54 Parkgate Ave. on Tuesday afternoon.
No one was injured.
Fire officials said the fire started in the basement and burned through areas of the first floor and caused some damage to the second floor. Officials are investigating the cause.
Child endangering plea
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 38-year-old mother of two pleaded innocent today to two misdemeanor counts of child endangerment.
Judge Robert Milich of Youngstown Municipal Court released Romonita Torres, 38, of Youngstown without requiring her to post bond. The judge placed Torres on house arrest. Her next court hearing date was not set as of this morning.
Police said Torres' 8-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son were home alone Saturday when a fire started in their Pasadena Avenue home. The children were standing in the driveway when firefighters arrived about 6:30 p.m. to extinguish the blaze.
The house sustained $7,500 worth of damage. The cause is being investigated.
If found guilty of the charges, she faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Road reopens to traffic
BOARDMAN -- Western Reserve Road reopened to traffic Tuesday afternoon between Hitchcock and Tippecanoe roads upon completion of work on a bridge over Mill Creek, just west of the Ohio Turnpike.
However, drivers are urged to be cautious because work will continue along the road, possibly placing construction vehicles on the road and causing delays, according to Mahoning County Engineer Richard A. Marsico.
Struthers food drive
STRUTHERS -- Pupils and teachers at Struthers Elementary School participated in the school's Parent-Teacher Association food drive for the Fellowship Church Food Pantry, 115 Frank St.
Food and toiletries collected at the school will be delivered to the food pantry, where it will be sorted and bagged in preparation for a food giveaway at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Beaver Twp. police
NORTH LIMA -- The Beaver Township trustees promoted two reserve police officers to part-time status at their meeting Tuesday.
Danny T. Beniston of Salem and Adam R. Treharne of Struthers will move to their new positions effective next Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The township will set their salaries.
Beniston and Treharne are full-time police officers with the Springfield Township Police Department.
The township also announced the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has approved plans for the Woodworth Park pavilion remodeling project. The township will begin advertising for bids for that work in January.
Also, the township park board has set its monthly meetings for next year. Beginning in January, the board will meet at 6:30 p.m. the first Monday of each month at the township administration building.
Pictures with Santa
LIBERTY -- Children may be photographed with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Liberty Branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library at 1 p.m. Saturday.
There will also be stories, games and treats.
McDonald board meeting
McDONALD -- The village board of education has changed the date of its regular meeting this month from the third Monday of the month to Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library.
