New Middletown fire department to buy hose tester

NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Village council approved the purchase of a portable pressure hose tester for the fire department.
Fire Chief Bill Opsitnik said the tester will save wear and tear on pumper trucks, which are now used to test the hoses. He was also authorized to buy a pressure washer wand.
Council allowed $3,000 for the purchase of both items Monday night.
The lawmakers also agreed to accept $675 as a settlement for two crabapple trees destroyed by a motorist in a recent traffic accident on Main Street. The trees were among a group lining the curb area near the municipal building.
Roger Sherman, who lives at Linford and Foster Drives, asked council to do something about a water problem that is causing excessive dampness and mold growth in his home. He said the water buildup is caused by a neighbor's partially blocked storm sewer. Police Chief Bill Morvay, who is temporary village administrator, said he will send the neighbor a letter.
Members also unanimously commended longtime council member Rebecca Mason for her years of service. Mason, who retires at the end of the year, served 18 years on council and four years as clerk. She will be succeeded by Dan Stanton, who ran unopposed for the seat.
