New York Giants quarterback Kerry Collins injured his left ankle against the Washington Redskins on a play that was blown dead for delay of game Sunday.
Collins, who started his 67th straight game, was hurt when hit by Bruce Smith after releasing a pass. Neither Collins, Smith nor referee Walt Coleman heard the back judge blowing his whistle to signal the penalty.
Meanwhile, Titans QB Steve McNair sprained his left ankle in the second quarter of a 29-27 loss to Indianapolis and aggravated his already sore right calf.
But he still nearly rallied the Titans (9-4) to a tie. He threw two touchdown passes in the final 9:24 and even ran for a 2-point conversion.
Collins' X-rays negative
Collins fell backward after being hit from behind by Smith and his ankle bent awkwardly. He was taken off the field on a golf cart for X-rays, which were negative.
"I was just playing it out as if there was no penalty or no one trying to stop it or anything," said Collins, who came to the interview room on crutches and with a protective boot on his foot. "The first time I found out there was a penalty was when I came into the training room."
Collins, who has started every game since late in the 1999 season, is scheduled to have an MRI today. He hopes to play again this season.
Collins finished 5-of-14 for 62 yards and one interception. Jesse Palmer was 7-of-11 for 83 yards in finishing up the 20-7 loss. He also was sacked five times, including once by Smith, who set an NFL mark for career sacks (199).
Also, Giants WRs Ike Hilliard (knee) and Tim Carter (hit to the head) left the game in the second half.
Jets kick returner Jonathan Carter sprained his left knee against Buffalo and is out indefinitely.
Carter was hurt when his left leg bent awkwardly beneath him as he was tackled by Pierson Prioleau and Angelo Crowell at the end of a 19-yard kickoff return early in the second quarter.
