SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Quarterback Jeff Zolman ran for three touchdowns and Wofford reached the Division I-AA semifinals for the first time with a 34-17 victory over defending national champion Western Kentucky on Saturday.
The Terriers (12-1) have won 12 straight since an opening week loss at Air Force, and will travel to Delaware next Saturday with a trip to the title game on the line.
Although early on, this looked like the Hilltoppers' day. Quarterback Justin Haddix went long to Shannon Hayes for an 82-yard touchdown pass on the first play for Western Kentucky (9-4) to lead 7-0 with 20 seconds gone in the game.
That's when the Wofford defense and Zolman's skill at the wing-bone option attack took over.
Haddix was just 1-of-7 for 6 yards the rest of the half. Western Kentucky only managed 263 yards in the game after Hayes' score. The team was held to half its 34-points per game average.
Colgate 28, W. Illinois 27
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Colgate ran its winning streak to 20 games in a blinding snowstorm, winning on Jamaal Branch's 1-yard touchdown run with 1:50 remaining. Ryan Miller's last-minute interception sealed the victory for the Raiders (14-0). Western Illinois finished 9-4.
Delaware 37, Northern Iowa 7
NEWARK, Del. -- Delaware's Germaine Bennett ran for a career-high 140 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Antawn Jenkins also ran for two TDs touchdowns for the Blue Hens (13-1), who advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 1986. Tom Petrie scored for Northern Iowa (10-3).
Brad Shushman kicked field goals of 24, 30 and 32 yards, giving him a school-record 16 for the season.
The Blue Hens took advantage of a blocked punt, fumble and two pass-interference penalties against the Panthers to take a 17-0 lead.
Delaware scored on its first possession, with Bennett's 2-yard plunge capping a nine-play, 54-yard drive.
Florida Atlantic 48, N. Arizona 25
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Jared Allen passed for 228 yards and three touchdowns in three quarters, and Florida Atlantic routed Northern Arizona.
The Owls' 10th straight win kept coach Howard Schnellenberger on track to join Ohio State's Jim Tressel as coaches who have won national titles at the I-AA and I-A levels. Schnellenberger's 1983 Miami team won that school's first championship.
