The Penguin Parade committee seeks artists to turn 5-foot-tall fiberglass penguins into public works of art. Call for artists deadline is Jan. 12. For an application, visit www/ysu.edu/develop and click on "Penguin Parade" or call Catherine Cala at (330) 941-2752. Some project details:
Artists will be selected for the project in January and receive the birds in February.
The art will be unveiled in July during the Summer Festival of the Arts and remain on display until October throughout Youngstown and the suburbs.
The penguins will be auctioned in November.
Each penguin will have a corporate sponsor that pays a $2,850 fee to fund materials and a $1,500 artist's stipend. Sponsors will select artists from a group of finalists chosen by a Penguin Parade selection committee. The penguins will not feature corporate logos or slogans.
Committed sponsors are the Cleveland Browns, Cohen and Co., Compco Industries, General Motors, Home Savings and Loan Co., Humility of Mary Health Services, Hynes Industries, Legg Mason, Packer Thomas, Prodigal Media, Sky Bank, UBS Financial Services, Wendell August Forge, Youngstown Rotary Club's Put Kids First and the YSU Alumni Association. Some sponsorships are still available; call (330) 941-2752.
Money from the auction will go to local nonprofit groups including YSU's McDonough Museum of Art, YSU's Students Motivated by the Arts program, the Community Foundation, Youngstown Hearing and Speech, Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries, Community Living, Beatitude House, Potential Development, Leadership Mahoning Valley and the Junior League of Youngstown.
