Pittsburgh cop on leave arrested in firing of shots at tractor-trailer

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A 35-year-old police officer on leave was arrested Friday on charges he peppered a tractor-trailer with bullets in an apparent case of road rage.
Paul Palmer, 35, a 10-year Pittsburgh police officer, was arrested Friday afternoon, two days after 33-year-old Oliver Sherwood's rig was hit with seven bullets on Interstate 279 just outside Pittsburgh. One of the tires on the truck was flattened but Sherwood was not injured.
Sherwood said he steered his truck from the left lane into the right lane of the highway to avoid hitting a station wagon police say Palmer was driving. Once he got back into the left lane, he told police, he heard seven gunshots come from the green Subaru.
Palmer was being held in the Allegheny County Jail on reckless endangerment and assault charges, said state police Trooper Robin Mungo.
Palmer did not have a listed number; it was unclear if he had an attorney.
Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Tammy Ewin said the department would conduct an internal investigation before deciding whether to seek disciplinary action against Palmer, who was on workers' compensation.
