Clothes dryer falls victim to a hunter's stray bullet
DERRY, Pa. (AP) -- Dennis Freeman's clothes dryer is shot.
But it could have been worse. A stray bullet that pierced the side of his modular home in Derry Township, about 45 miles east of Pittsburgh, and then ruined his clothes dryer narrowly missed Freeman's 300-pound propane tank.
"I don't even want to think about what would've happened if it had hit that," Freeman said.
Freeman, himself a hunter, said he noticed the bullet hole, probably from a .30-caliber rifle, in his laundry room Monday afternoon.
Bullets from hunting rifles can travel as far as three miles and hunters need to keep that in mind, said officials from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, to whom Freeman reported the shooting.
Officials say it's rare for bullets to hit houses and Freeman holds no malice.
"I realize that it was just an accident, but I want hunters to be more aware of the direction they are shooting and how far bullets carry if they don't hit their targets," Freeman said.
Freeman's dryer "still works, but there's shrapnel all through it so we're going to replace it."
