BOYS BASKETBALL Mooney's defense holds back Orange



Rayen and Campbell scored decisive victories.
PEPPER PIKE -- The Cardinal Mooney High boys basketball team held Orange scoreless over the first four minutes of the second and third quarters to win 50-47 in a season opener Friday.
Jeff Hehr sparked the Cardinals, who led throughout the game, with 17 points, while Ron Stoops and David Zidian each added 13.
Rayen School 75, Vision Quest 49
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dominic Crosby fired in 26 points to trigger the Tigers (1-0), who had nine players in the scoring column.
Westley Triplett chipped in with 11 points and he grabbed 12 rebounds. Deon Elliot had four assists.
Columbiana 77, Jackson-Milton 72
NORTH JACKSON -- Steve Grimm scored eight of his 14 points in overtime as Columbiana rallied past Jackson-Milton.
Three other Clippers (1-0) scored in double figures -- David Rice with 17, Austen Couchenour with 14 and David Cramer with 11 -- as Columbiana overcame an 18-10 first-quarter deficit.
Tim Shaw led the Bluejays (0-1) with 25 points and 10 of his team's 31 rebounds. Also netting double figures for the Bluejays were Zack Nicholas (16), Justin Vayner (11) and Mark Balent (10).
Lordstown 76, Mathews 47
VIENNA -- Chris Vesey and Ian Paddock each scored 14 points to lead Lordstown.
Tom Andriko had 16 points for Mathews.
Campbell 77, Yo. Christian 33
YOUNGSTOWN -- Campbell took command in the second quarter, then put the game away in the third to beat Youngstown Christian.
Campbell led 29-22 in the second quarter, then used a 22-9 surge in the third to take control.
Teyon Harris sparked Campbell (1-0) with 19 points. Terance Phillips and Louie Samoras added 12 apiece.
Kory Cooper and Mike Byrdy led the Eagles (0-1) with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Erie McDowell 89, Shenango 47
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- McDowell rushed out to a 35-9 lead in the first quarter, then cruised past Shenango in the first round of the Blackhawk Tipoff tournament.
Steve McNees paced Shenango (2-2) with 21 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
Tyler Stoczynski and Sean Smiley led Erie McDowell with 26 and 21 points, respectively.
