Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. SHORT-TERM OPPORTUNITIES:
Girard Multi-Generational Center: Volunteers are needed to help with the community Christmas party to be held Dec. 13 from 2-4 p.m.
Gleaners Food Bank: Help will be needed Dec. 23-25. A dinner will be served Dec. 25.
First Night Youngstown: Volunteers are needed to help with this family oriented New Year's Eve celebration before and on Dec. 31. There are a variety of jobs.
Head Start/Youngstown Area Community Action Council: People are wanted to serve lunch and be teacher's aides from Dec. 8-21.
K-9's For Compassion: Volunteers are needed to help with the pets picture with Santa Claus project Dec. 20 and 21.
Salvation Army: Bell ringers are wanted from now until the end of December. Also needed are people to distribute toys Dec. 17 and to sort and bag toys Dec. 8-12 and 15-16.
YWCA: Volunteers are needed to collect and distribute toys from Dec. 15-18.

Long-term volunteer help is needed for these agencies:
Antonine Adult Care: Volunteers can assist clients with activities, visit with them and share a special talent with them. Training provided.
American Red Cross Disaster Services: Caseworkers are needed for military families and flood victims, instructors are needed for CPR, First Aid and Safety education and people are needed to help with blood-pressure screening. Training provided.
Boys and Girls Club: Volunteers are needed for the educational athletic youth programs and for clerical and receptionist duties.
Associated Neighborhood Centers: Assistance is needed with the youth after school and the senior socialization programs.
Catholic Charities Regional Agency: Volunteers are wanted to help homebound seniors with transportation, grocery shopping and friendly visits.
Central Day Care: Volunteers are needed to assist the teachers and help with the children's needs and activities.
Citizen Corps: A part of Homeland Security, trained volunteers will respond when there is a local disaster or emergency.
Mahoning County Homeless Coalition: Wanted are people who are interested in aiding the homeless through the Blanket Drive and other opportunities.
Operation Learning Community Program: Volunteers can help with after-school tutoring, life skills and recreation for inner-city children.
Potential Development Program: Volunteers needed to greet children, help at snack and lunch time and assist the teachers.
RSVP: People 55 years and older are wanted to share their life skills and help their community in a variety of ways.
United Methodist Community Center: Volunteers are needed to be mentors and tutors for the children.
VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance): Volunteers are needed to help others with special needs to prepare their basic tax returns. Training provided.
Volunteer Services to Seniors: Dedicated people are needed to assist senior citizens with grocery shopping, errands, reassurance calls or friendly visits.
