PSU student dies in fall
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- A Penn State University student died after falling down an elevator shaft in one of the campus residence halls. Katherine Ibanez, 21, of West Palm Beach, Fla., fell more than 40 feet when she and several other students tried to get out of an elevator that had stopped between floors Friday night in Atherton Hall.
University police said seven people were in the elevator when it stopped between the building's third and fourth floors. Instead of waiting for elevator technicians, the occupants forced the doors open. Two students jumped out safely, but Ibanez slipped and fell backward into the open shaft, officials said.
An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday. Atherton Hall is home to Penn State's Schreyer Honors College. Ibanez had an off-campus address and did not live in Atherton.
