Another Suhey to attend Penn St.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- It's been more than 20 years since Penn State had a Suhey on the football roster, but that drought is about to end.
Kevin Suhey, the quarterback for State College Area High School, said Wednesday that he would sign a letter of intent with the Nittany Lions, making him the fourth generation of his family to play at Penn State. He also was recruited by Stanford, Duke and Minnesota, but that he never really considered playing anywhere other than Penn State.
"I've been dreaming about going to Penn State and playing football since I was little," Suhey said.
It's easy to imagine why. Suhey's great-grandfather, Bob Higgins, played for Penn State from 1914 through '17, and again in '19. Higgins' son, Steve Suhey, played for the Nittany Lions in 1942, and again in '46 and '47, before going on to play professional football in Pittsburgh.
Steve Suhey's son and Kevin Suhey's father, Paul Suhey, was the second of three Suhey brothers who played for Penn State in the 1970s. The third, running back Matt Suhey, was selected in the second round of the 1980 NFL draft.
Kevin Suhey has been State College's starting quarterback the past two seasons after playing as a backup quarterback and strong safety as a sophomore.
He finished his career second on the school's career passing yards list (3,442) and first in completions (280), completing almost 62 percent of his attempts.
