COLUMBIANA COUNTY Gifted pupils to compete, perform at mythology fair
The annual event draws more than 500 spectators.
LEETONIA -- Thirty-five teams of gifted pupils from all over the county will converge tonight for the Columbiana County Educational Service Center's mythology fair.
Pupils in second through 12th grades will compete in mythology trivia contests, perform plays they've written after researching mythology tales, portray mythology characters, create math games and relate mythology to science.
Vaughn Musser, a CCESC coordinator of programs for gifted and talented pupils, said the annual fairs by gifted and talented pupils draw about 500 parents and friends to observe the works. There is a different theme each year, she said.
The event is 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. throughout the Leetonia Schools complex.
Months of study
Musser said the projects are the result of three months of study in classrooms across the county.
The pupils created more than 200 projects to present throughout the evening.
Projects can be viewed 6 to 8:30 p.m. Trivia contests will begin at 5:30 p.m., with winners announced at 7:45 p.m.
Pupils will perform plays from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. There will be plays by eight different groups.
Pupils will also display the results of their studies of different cultures. Pupils in second through fourth grades explored Greek, Roman and American Indian cultures.
Pupils in the fifth and sixth grades studied Aztec, Incan, Mayan, Far Eastern, East Asian, Egyptian and South and Central American cultures. Pupils in seventh through 12th grades explored the cultures of the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Northern Europe, South and Central Asia and the British Isles.
