BASEBALL
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago White Sox bolstered their infield depth, getting Juan Uribe from the Colorado Rockies for minor league infielder Aaron Miles.
Uribe hit .253 with a career-high 10 homers and 33 RBIs for the Rockies last season. He missed the first two months of the season with a broken bone in his left foot.
Miles spent most of the season at Triple-A Charlotte, where he was chosen as the International League rookie of the year. The switch-hitter batted .304 and led the league with a club-record 166 hits. He also hit 11 homers and had 50 RBIs.
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A dietary supplement firm thinks the Baltimore Orioles are liable in the death of pitcher Steve Bechler and wants the team to pay any damages stemming from a lawsuit filed by the player's widow.
Nutraquest Inc. of Wall Township, N.J., formerly known as Cytodyne Technologies Inc., asked the U.S. District Court in Miami for permission to file suit against the Orioles. Bechler, 23, collapsed with heatstroke in February at the team's spring training site in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. His body temperature rose to more than 108 degrees and he died the next day.
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Florida Marlins' World Series victory was worth an extra $306,150 for players receiving full shares, the first increase in the payments after four years of declines.
The full share was up from the $272,147 the Anaheim Angels received in 2002, the commissioner's office said.
FOOTBALL
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The NFL extended its suspension for troubled Cleveland Browns running back William Green, making it unlikely he will play again this season.
Green was expected to rejoin the Browns on Monday from a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. But the league said it has lengthened its ban on the second-year back for "treatment purposes."
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue will decide when Green can return to the Browns after consulting with medical experts in the substance program, the league said in a statement.
Green, 23, was suspended by the NFL for four games on Nov. 8 after being arrested on charges of driving under the influence and marijuana possession. He has a pretrial hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
While serving his suspension, Green's fiancee was accused of stabbing him in the back with a steak knife. Asia Gray was charged with felonious assault and domestic violence.
------
Virginia Tech running back Kevin Jones will pass up his final season of college eligibility to enter the NFL draft, his father and the team's running backs coach told The Associated Press.
Jones, a 6-foot, 221-pound junior projected as possibly the top running back in the draft, has rushed for a school-record 1,494 yards this season, averaging 5.6 yards for 265 carries. He has scored 20 touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 136 yards.
BASKETBALL
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Trail Blazer forward Zach Randolph was charged with driving under the influence after an officer said he smelled marijuana in the player's car, police said.
The misdemeanor charge carries a potential sentence of up to one year in jail and up to a $5,000 fine, according to Multnomah County sheriff's Lt. Mike Shults. Randolph was to be arraigned Dec. 30.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Charges against Darrell Armstrong were dismissed by a judge who ruled it couldn't be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the Hornets guard intentionally struck an officer.
Armstrong's attorney had argued the NBA player accidentally hit Officer Teresa Joyce, swinging his arm in reaction to her touching him as she tried to escort him off the street outside an Orlando nightclub on July 7.
HOCKEY
CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago Blackhawks forward Eric Daze will undergo back surgery to repair a herniated disc and will be sidelined about 10 weeks.
AUTO RACING
WASHINGTON (AP) -- NASCAR champion Matt Kenseth and a large group of current and former Winston Cup stars were honored at the White House by President Bush.
On the stage with the president and Kenseth were Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart, Bill Elliott, and brothers Terry and Bobby Labonte. The only top 10 driver not on hand was Jeff Gordon, who had a previous commitment.
Bush also introduced several drivers in the audience, including Mark Martin, Dale Jarrett and Rusty Wallace, as well as former champions Darrell Waltrip and Ned Jarrett and several NASCAR officials.
Bush had particular praise for retired NASCAR chairman and CEO Bill France Jr., who was in the audience.
