BOSTON, Mass. -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team continued to have its problems on the road, as the Penguins suffered an 83-61 setback to Boston University Monday night.
The Penguins (1-3) are 0-3 away from Beeghly Center this season and extended their regular season road winless streak to 32 straight games.
The Penguins, who committed 22 turnovers, never led in the game, and after the first 10 minutes of play never got the margin below double figures against the Terriers (1-3).
"The key for us was to get off to a good start and we never did that," said YSU coach John Robic. "We just got outplayed by a better team.
"We didn't have it tonight and I have no explanation other than we got outplayed," he added.
The Penguins had just one player in double figures and that was freshman Quinn Humphrey, who had a career-high 17 points off the bench.
"[Humphrey] played hard tonight," Robic said. "He wanted the ball and produced for us. He was our only bright spot."
Junior Doug Underwood added nine points and senior Adam Baumann chipped in with eight points. Senior Tejay Anderson had six points and a game-high seven rebounds as the Penguins outrebounded the Terriers 39-29.
But the hot-shooting Terriers were too much for the Penguins. Led by senior Matt Turner with 20 points, Boston hit 29-of-60 shots from the field and shot 53 percent in the first half.
Turner was joined by four other Terriers in double figures, including 19 from junior Rashad Bell, 15 by junior Chaz Carr, 11 by sophomore Shaun Wynn and 10 by sophomore Kevin Gardner.
The Penguins fell behind quickly 6-0 in the first three minutes, but Baumann scored the Penguins' first points at 16:40 and Underwood followed with a 3-point shot to bring YSU to within one point, 6-5.
But from then on it was the Terriers, who pulled away gradually before Turner came in and scored 11 of the team's next 13 points and Boston led 27-12.
Boston took its biggest lead of the first half, 35-12, with five minutes remaining, but the Penguins outscored the Terriers 12-4 in the final minutes to trail 39-24 at intermission.
YSU kept it rolling at the start of the second half, opening with a 6-2 run to pull to within 11 points with just over 17 minutes remaining, but that would be as close as the Penguins would get.
Boston then went on a 10-2 run, sparked by Bell and Carr, to pull ahead 51-32.
Trailing 57-36 the Penguins made one last run at the Terriers with a 10-2 run, six of those points by Humphrey, to cut the lead to 59-46 with 8:30 remaining.
But with 4:09 remaining Boston was back into its biggest lead of the game, 72-49, and the Penguins never made another run.
YSU will return home on Wednesday night to play Slippery Rock at 7 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
