ST. LOUIS -- Youngstown State kickers Nick Terracina and Joe Bishop were named to the Gateway Football Conference's All-Newcomer Team.
Terracina, a junior placekicker from Lake Charles, La., made 13-of-17 field goal attempts and converted 29-of-30 extra points for a team-high 68 points. He kicked a school-record 56-yard field goal against Liberty.
Bishop, a redshirt freshman from St. Thomas Aquinas High in Louisville, averaged 40 yards per punt, becoming the second YSU punter since 1986 to reach that average.
Northern Iowa running back Terrance Freeney was named the league's Newcomer of the Year and Western Kentucky quarterback Justin Haddix was the Freshman of the Year.
Scott Thiessen isAcademic All-America
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior free safety Scott Thiessen of Modesto, Calif., was named first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Thiessen is the fourth YSU player to be named first team, after Anthony Pannunzio (1998), John Quintana (1993) and Sam Barbera (1978).
Thiessen, who was a first-team Academic All-Gateway selection, has a 3.59 GPA in special education. This fall he was second on the Penguins with 86 total tackles while recording three interceptions.

Jim Chaney named
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College football standout Jim Chaney (Hubbard) was named to the Academic All-America College Division first team by CoSIDA.
Chaney, a senior offensive tackle, is the first Titan football player to earn Academic All-America honors since 1998.
Chaney was a three-year letterman and two-year starter for the Titans, serving as team captain each of the past two seasons.
Chaney maintains a 3.842 GPA majoring in history.

COITSVILLE -- Marty Berendt made a hole-in-one at Bedford Trails Golf Course recently.
The 76-year-old aced the No. 18 hole, 135 yards, using an 8-iron. He was in a group that included Ray Gaydos, Tommy Cole and Emil Gozur.
Corrections
The name of Poland High soccer player Krista Ginnetti was misspelled in last weekend's listing of all-conference selections. The misspelling was submitted to The Vindicator by the Metro Athletic Conference.
Also, the name of Austintown Fitch soccer player Anthony Colaluca was misspelled in the list of Federal League all-stars recently. Colaluca is a junior who played forward for the Falcons.
Sean Finnerty was omitted from the list of boys cross country all-stars. Finnerty, a Cardinal Mooney runner, was selected to the Steel Valley Conference's second team.

Pirates sign Nunez
PITTSBURGH -- Utility infielder Abraham Nunez agreed Monday to a $625,000, one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Nunez hit .248 with four homers and 35 RBIs in a career-high 311 at-bats last season. He filled in at second base after Pokey Reese missed five months with a thumb injury and played some at shortstop.

Baseball moves
* NEW YORK -- While Gary Sheffield met with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, New York escalated the arms race in the AL East, agreeing to a contract with free agent reliever Tom Gordon.
Aaron Boone and Enrique Wilson, two of the six Yankees eligible for salary arbitration, agreed to one-year contracts.
* ST. LOUIS -- Chris Carpenter, who hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2001, agreed Monday to a one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.
* PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks got Richie Sexson from Milwaukee in a nine-player deal Monday that sent infielder Craig Counsell and second baseman Junior Spivey to the Brewers.
First baseman Lyle Overbay, catcher Chad Moeller and left-handers Jorge De La Rosa and Chris Capuano also were dealt to Milwaukee.
In addition to Sexson, Arizona received left-hander Shane Nance and a player to be named.
* Free agent second baseman Luis Castillo decided to stay with the World Series champions, reaching agreement Monday night on a three-year deal worth $16 million.
Earnhardt photosrequest rejected
WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court rejected an appeal from a student-run newspaper that wanted autopsy photos of race car driver Dale Earnhardt.
NBA moves
* A six-player trade that sent Bulls forward Jalen Rose to the Raptors for Antonio Davis was finalized two days after it was announced.
Besides Rose, the Bulls are sending forwards Donyell Marshall and Lonny Baxter to the Raptors. In return, Chicago gets Davis, Jerome Williams and Chris Jefferies.
* Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs was suspended for one game by the NBA for pushing an official to the floor.
