Mom's suit alleges pupilwas hurt in bus rush
NILES -- A city woman has sued the local school district alleging negligence after her 7-year-old daughter was injured by children "stampeding" off a bus.
Melissa Miller of Royal Mall Drive filed the suit last week in Niles Municipal Court, seeking a minimum of $3,000 in damages.
The suit contends the district allowed pupils to recklessly exit a bus Nov. 20, when her daughter was caught underneath the other children and stepped on.
Court papers say the girl was pushed from behind by an unidentified pupil when she stepped into the aisle to exit the bus when it stopped on Vienna Avenue at Royal Mall Drive.
The suit says she was face down on the floor and was stepped on by at least three other children before another pupil let her up to exit.
Man, 19, chargedin death of 16-year-old
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Glenmont Street man has been charged with the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy on the North Side late last month.
Stefan Breedlove, 19, is charged with the aggravated murder of James Revere of Saranac Avenue. Revere died Nov. 23 in a car on Hayman Street.
Breedlove was arrested on an unrelated aggravated menacing warrant at 3:30 p.m. Monday at 300 E. Scott St., the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center. Breedlove and Keon L. Richardson, 19, of Clearmount Avenue, who was being sought on two aggravated menacing warrants, agreed to turn themselves in and chose the juvenile center, police said.
Breedlove was charged with the murder after he was brought to the police station downtown.
Breedlove and Richardson's aggravated menacing warrants were issued last month when both were charged with threatening women.
Breedlove and Richardson spent the night in the Mahoning County jail pending arraignment today in municipal court.
Arraigned in child rapes
YOUNGSTOWN -- Wayne A. Castle, Jr, accused of raping two young girls in his West Wood Street apartment, was arraigned today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, and Magistrate Eugene Fehr set Castle's bond at $1 million.
Castle, 22, was indicted by a county grand jury Nov. 25 on six counts each of rape and gross sexual imposition, to which he pleaded innocent today.
Police say Castle raped two Williamson Avenue girls, ages 4 and 7, and that he confessed in a nine-page statement.
In his statement, Castle admitted touching the girls inappropriately and taking a bath with both of them.
The victims told police that Castle made them shave his back. The alleged assaults took place between Nov. 17 and 23.
Meeting date changed
McDONALD -- The board of education has changed the date of its December meeting from the third Monday of the month to Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library.
School board session
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Board of Education has changed the date of its regular meeting from the third Wednesday of the month to Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
Trustees reschedule
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees will hold their caucus at 10 a.m. Monday at the township administration building. Trustees have re-scheduled their regular monthly meeting from the second Tuesday of the month to Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. at the administration building.
UPMC wound centers
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- UPMC Horizon will open its new wound-care centers Thursday for patients suffering from chronic wounds, including those related to diabetes, circulatory disorders and bedsores. Both centers will be open every Thursday.
The center at the Park Medical Building, 2120 Likens Lane, Suite 104, Farrell, will be open from 8 a.m. to noon, and the one on the third floor of UPMC's Greenville campus will be open from 1 to 4 p.m.
The centers' medical director will be Dr. Thomas Serena, who operates six other western Pennsylvania wound-care centers.
Masked robbers strike
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- Two masked men forced their way into a Francis Drive home.
Pennsylvania State Police said one man had a gun and threatened the 50-year-old resident. The men took the woman's purse and then ran.
Police said the robbery happened Saturday, but they did not say what time.
