CHAMPION SCHOOLS Board member honored for service
Assault leave was approved for a high school teacher hurt by a student.
CHAMPION -- Peigi Tracey, Champion Board of Education member, is one of only two recipients this year of the Ohio Educational Service Centers' Board Member Leadership Award.
Tracey received the award at a school board meeting.
She was nominated by Champion schools Superintendent Pamela Hood for outstanding service to the school district and community.
Specifically, Tracey was honored because of the work she's done with 4-H and with school fund-raising efforts.
Hood said sometimes there are as many as 25 awards given to Ohio board members, but this year there were only two.
She went on to explain that the award is not based on a competition, and any board member can receive the award if he or she is nominated.
"They are the sort of unsung heroes of the community," Hood said. "They do a lot of work, and there aren't many avenues to honor them."
Other business
In another matter, board members approved assault leave for Jennifer Skowron, high school English teacher, for an injury she suffered when dealing with a student in mid-November.
Board members were told that the student was disciplined for the confrontation.
The board also appropriated $35,489 from a state Student Intervention grant to provide additional help for students so they are better prepared for proficiency tests, said Treasurer Brian Gillespie.
