WARREN -- The city's annual tree lighting will be Friday downtown.
Santa and his elves will arrive at 5 p.m. on a sleigh to Courthouse Square followed by the tree lighting at 5:05 p.m. with Mayor Hank Angelo and WYTV Channel 33's Stan Boney.
At 7 p.m., Channel 33 will broadcast choirs live from the square.
From 5 to 8 p.m., the children can meet with Santa Claus at the gazebo. Each child gets a toy, a picture with Santa and a cookie from Cookies to Go.
Free horse and carriage rides will be given around the square, and participating downtown businesses will conduct open houses offering refreshments. Children also can hang personal ornaments on the Christmas tree.
Fire damages house
HOWLAND -- Firefighters say an electrical fire caused $5,000 in loss to a home at 3684 Nutley.
The blaze broke out around 5:53 a.m. Sunday, reports state. No injuries were reported.
The Red Cross was called to help the family find housing until the home is repaired, reports state.
Lighting to follow Mass
GIRARD -- The Girard Knights of Columbus will have a special Light Up for Christ Mass at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Rose Church.
The Mass will be followed by the lighting of an outdoor manger scene, carols and refreshments.
Man attacked in bar
NILES -- A 41-year-old Warren man was treated at St. Elizabeth Medical Center after police found him unconscious after a bar brawl.
Police were called to the Naus Club, Cedar Street, for a fight pitting three men and three women against the Brunstetter Road man. Reports said the Warren man was at the club around 9 p.m. Sunday when the group of men and women attacked him with their fists, feet and pool sticks.
No charges have been filed yet.
Shoplifting reported
NILES -- Two stores in Eastwood Mall filed reports of the same women stealing merchandise worth several hundred dollars. The women have been identified by police but have not yet been charged.
Reports state the women took $594 in merchandise from Gadzooks and an additional $200 in items from Wet Seal around 6 p.m. Sunday.
3 charged in break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three men in a van hauling fireplace mantles on its roof were arrested Saturday morning on Ohio Avenue and charged with breaking and entering.
Arrested were Bernard Merchant, 31, of Halleck Street; Brian L. Moore, 35, of Oxford Avenue; and Jerome M. Young, 35, of West Chalmers Avenue.
Police said the mantles had been taken from a vacant house at 1406 Fifth Ave.
Holiday food drive
SHARON, Pa. -- The F.H. Buhl Nursery School and the Shenango Valley Community Library will sponsor a holiday food drive from Wednesday through Dec. 13.
The public is asked to bring nonperishable food, paper products and personal hygiene items to the library, 11 N. Sharpsville Ave. The Salvation Army will distribute the donations.
Nursery-school children will decorate the Christmas tree in the library's children's area Wednesday with ornaments the children made.
Citizens awards
COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations through Jan. 5 for its outstanding citizens of the year awards. The awards will be presented at the chamber's annual awards banquet Feb. 8 at the Dutch Village Inn.
Categories include student of the year, teacher of the year, business of the year, civil servant of the year and an award for outstanding community service.
