NILES Man's mental health evaluated after violent episode, police say

NILES -- A Mistletoe Road man was being evaluated at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren today after an argument on his birthday ended in violence, police say.
Niles police said they planned to file charges of abduction, discharging a firearm and domestic violence today against Robert Young, 30, in Niles Municipal Court. The charges were to be filed after he was discharged from the hospital.
Young's girlfriend told police the couple had gone out Saturday night to a local bar to celebrate and got into an argument once they got home. Reports said Young struck the 29-year-old woman several times and threw several items from the bathroom at her.
Young pointed a shotgun at her several times, threatening to shoot her and then himself, before he fired into the ceiling, police said.
Young also tried to strangle his girlfriend, police said. The woman said she waited until Young passed out before she called her brother, who called police.
Police took Young in handcuffs to the hospital for a mental evaluation early Sunday.
The woman refused medical treatment.
