Kennedy Catholicstops Hickory
FARRELL, Pa. -- Sharron Summerville scored 19 points and Roddy Fuller added 17 Sunday as the Kennedy Catholic High boys basketball team downed Hickory 50-41 to finish third in the Farrell Tipoff Tournament.
Fuller also grabbed six of 17 rebounds and had six steals for Kennedy Catholic (1-1). Brandon Mirizio had seven assists.
Winston Kennedy took scoring honors for the Hornets (0-2) with 23 points.
Laurel wins title
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Mike Burkett scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Laurel past Moniteau 75-55 in the championship game of the Slippery Rock Tournament.
Bobby Turner added 14 points and Jeff Elliott 11 to reinforce Laurel (2-0).
Tyler Grossman had 16 points to lead Moniteau (0-1), while Tyler Hempfling had 13, Scott Weist 10 and David Rumbaugh seven, with six rebounds.
Reynolds capturesown tournament
TRANSFER, Pa. -- Shauna Smith scored 15 points, while Marti Shellenbarger and Michelle Cullen chipped in with 11 apiece, as Reynolds beat Sharon 62-52 to win the championship of the Reynolds Tournament.
Jessi Saul added nine points for Reynolds (2-0).
Brittany Csatlos scored 17 points and Shelley Goodpastor 15 to pace Sharon (1-1).
United edges Malvern
MALVERN -- The United High girls basketball team edged Malvern 36-35 in the season opener Saturday.
Trista Houck led the Eagles with nine points and seven rebounds, while Krista Reeder added eight points.
Boardman winsice hockey event
BOARDMAN -- Tristan Lysowski scored the winning goal on an assist from Arman Olgun as the Boardman High ice hockey club team edged Poland 4-3 for the championship in the Thanksgiving tournament Sunday at the Ice Zone.
Spartans goalie John Yuhaniak was named MVP.
Bob Walla added two goals, while Shawn Fulks had three assists. Pat Rafeedie had a goal and an assist.
Jim Pasquine, Poland's MVP, scored a goal and had two assists. Brett Pitzulo and Erik Lasko added a goal apiece.
Borderhawks No. 1 inGold Cup tournament
GARFIELD HEIGHTS -- The Youngstown Borderhawks, a PeeWee AA Minor ice hockey team, won the Gold Cup tournament last weekend.
Team members are Nathan Good, Brian Helbley, Adam Hogan, Tommy Jackson, Benjamin Jensen, Jimmy Lacko, T.J. Lindquist, John O'Brien, Ryan Rinko, Brian Styers, Ryan Taylor, Hunter Thompson and Johnathan Vanasdale.
The coaches are Brian Styers, Stewart Thompson and Steve Jensen. The team manager is Mike Vanasdale.
Struthers graduatepaces Thiel College
PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Adrienne Mowry of Struthers scored 22 points as Thiel College topped D'Youville College 81-47 Sunday in Manning-Mapier gymnasium.
Thiel (2-3) built a 35-16 lead by the break and D'Youville (0-5) never got close.
Kerry Gutherie chipped in with 13 points and Kristen Schrecongost added 10 as 12 players got into the scoring column for Thiel.
Mount Union falls
ALLIANCE -- The Wooster College men's basketball team (3-1) built a 34-21 lead by intermission and Mount Union (2-2) wasn't able to come back in the NCAC/OAC Challenge tournament.
Rob Paulauskas and Kyle Karpinski each had 12 points for the Purple Raiders. Curtis Stevens and Jarrod Ferwerda had six rebounds apiece.
Matt Schlingman and Ryan Snyder each scored 13 points for Wooster.
Thomas Moreruns over Titans
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Unbeaten Thomas More College rushed out to a 30-15 lead by halftime, then cruised past Westminster College 65-35 in women's basketball action Sunday.
Freshman Desiree Sterling, a Newton Falls High graduate, led the Titans with 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Saints (4-0) put four players in double figures, with Brooke Warner leading the way with 15 points.

Sexson tradein the works
PHOENIX -- Arizona and the Milwaukee Brewers are working on a trade that would send slugger Richie Sexson to the Diamondbacks, a team source with knowledge of the talks confirmed Sunday night.
The deal could come as early as today, the source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
NHL record
NEW YORK -- Kerry Fraser was the referee for his record 1,500th NHL regular-season game Sunday night when the Toronto Maple Leafs played the New York Rangers.
Fraser, 52, was already No. 1 in games refereed after he passed Andy Van Hellemond in March. Van Hellemond, now the NHL's director of officiating, worked 1,475 regular-season games.
