ACHIEVEMENT TESTS | What to expect The Ohio Department of Education is phasing in achievement tests for grades three to 10, which will replace the current proficiency test system by March 2006. Here's

Third- and sixth-graders will take reading and math achievement tests.
Fourth- and seventh-graders will take reading, math and writing tests.
Fifth- and eighth-graders will be tested in reading, math, science and social studies.
Tenth-graders face all five subjects in the Ohio Graduation Test, which they must pass to earn a high school diploma. They will be able to take the test three times a year through 12th grade if they don't pass on the first try.
Students graduating in 2004, 2005 and 2006 will be required to pass the current ninth-grade proficiency test to graduate; students graduating in 2007 -- this year's high school freshmen -- and younger pupils must pass the new Ohio Graduation Test. Roughly one-half to 1 percent of seniors are denied a high school diploma for failure to pass the current ninth-grade proficiency test.
In each grade, pupils will also take diagnostic tests of subject matters on which they are not given achievement tests. For example, fourth- and seventh-graders take science and social studies diagnostics. These tests are used by a school district to determine a pupil's progress and if that pupil needs intervention in the subject area.
Pupils in kindergarten through second grade will be administered diagnostic tests in a limited number of areas.
