TOP 25 No. 5 Missouri struggles to win in opener



The Tigers got a real tough game from Oakland before prevailing in a 90-85 win.

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Jimmy McKenney and Rickey Paulding scored 21 points each to lead Missouri to a tough season-opening 90-85 victory over Oakland on Saturday night.
The No. 5 Tigers led Oakland, which is in just its sixth year of Division I-A play, by only one with less than three minutes to play.
The game was a homecoming for Paulding, a pre-season All-American, and teammate Arthur Johnson, both products of the Detroit Public School League. Oakland (2-4) is located 30 miles north of downtown Detroit, and the pair had a large cheering section among the sellout crowd of 4,055.
Johnson had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Missouri, which had five players score in double figures.
Oakland's Rawle Marshall led all scorers with 27 points, while Mike Helms had 21 before fouling out with 8:12 left and Missouri leading 70-67.
No. 13 St. Joseph's 75, Old Dominion 72
NORFOLK, Va. -- Jameer Nelson scored 24 points, including a half-court shot with less than 10 seconds left, for St. Joseph's.
A steal by Troy Nance and a layup by Isaiah Hunter with 20 seconds left capped a 15-4 run and pulled Old Dominion to 72-70.
After Nelson's long distance 3-pointer, Hunter hit an off-balance jumper in the lane with 1.7 seconds left to pull Old Dominion within three, but St. Joseph's (4-0) inbounded the ball and time ran out.
No. 16 Gonzaga 82, Georgia 76, OT
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Ronny Turiaf scored all 11 of Gonzaga's points in overtime and made key defensive stops.
Turiaf led Gonzaga (3-1) with 22 points. He also grabbed the final rebound of the game to seal the victory.
Jonas Hayes had 20 points for Georgia (2-1).
No. 18 Wake Forest 86, Yale 61
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Jamal Levy led four Wake Forest players in double figures with 19 points in the Demon Deacons' victory.
Levy also had seven rebounds for Wake Forest (3-0), which forced 20 turnovers. Justin Gray added 15 points, Eric Williams 12 and Vytas Danelius 10 for the Demon Deacons, who shot 50 percent.
Wake Forest tuned up to host Indiana on Tuesday.
Yale (3-2) was led by Dominick Martin's 15 points and hung tough in the early going despite sloppy play.
No. 19 Cincinnati 76, Coppin St. 56
CINCINNATI -- Field Williams matched his career high with 24 points, hitting eight of his 10 3-point shots, and Cincinnati relied on its trapping defense to beat Coppin State.
Cincinnati (3-0) forced 29 turnovers that set up 30 of its points and prevented Coppin State (2-4) from getting too close.
Tony Bobbitt added 21 points for the Bearcats, who put up the most points this season against the Eagles.
Jimmy Boykin scored 21 points for Coppin State, which has played two games in Cincinnati but none at home.
No. 21 Notre Dame 78, Mount St. Mary's, Md. 64
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Chris Thomas scored 22 points, and Chris Quinn added 15.
Torin Francis scored 13 points, making all three field goals and all seven free throws he attempted, and Torrian Jones chipped in with 12 for the Irish (2-0).
Notre Dame improved to 15-1 in November in four seasons under coach Mike Brey, while Mount St. Mary's (0-5) has lost eight straight road games dating to last season.
The Irish fell behind 8-2, but used an 11-0 run to pull ahead for good five minutes into the game. Notre Dame extended the lead to 21-10 when Rick Cornett hit a 3-pointer midway through the half. The Irish opened their biggest lead of the first half when Russell Carter hit a 3-pointer to make it 40-27 with 1 second left.
The Irish went ahead 59-34 when Quinn scored on a layup on a pass from Jones with 13:48 remaining in the game.
Landy Thompson and Nick Dodson led Mount St. Mary's with 17 points each.
No. 24 Oklahoma St. 84, Pepperdine 82
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Tony Allen hit the go-ahead free throw with 2.5 seconds left and Joey Graham rebounded Allen's miss on the second attempt and made a free throw to help Oklahoma State hold off Pepperdine.
