PIAA PLAYOFFS Strong run game propels Aliquippa
The Quips earned their fourth state championship berth.
MCMURRAY, PA. -- Darrelle Revis and Dontae Patrick combined for 287 yards and four touchdowns on the ground to lead Aliquippa to a 28-15 victory over Slippery Rock in the PIAA Class AA semifinals Friday night at Peters Township High School.
The victory earns Aliquippa (13-1) its fourth championship berth and first since 2000. The Quips will face either Northern Lehigh (13-0) or Lakeland (13-0) in the title game, which will be held Dec. 6 at noon at Hersheypark Stadium. The eastern regional semifinal was postponed until Saturday due to bad weather.
Revis rushed for 156 yards on 12 carries and scored on runs of 69 yards in the first quarter and 56 yards in the fourth quarter. Patrick rushed for 131 yards on 16 carries and scored on a 30-yard run in the second quarter and on a 36-yard run in the fourth quarter to ice the victory.
Slippery Rock (12-2) built a 15-8 first half lead with touchdown runs of 2 and 30 yards by Travis Sarver, who led the Rockets with 117 yards on 19 carries.
Aliquippa held Slippery Rock to 31 yards in total offense in the second half, after allowing 163 yards in the first half.
Quad A
WEXFORD, Pa. -- Eugene Jarvis scored three touchdowns to lead Central Catholic to a 30-0 win over State College at North Allegheny High School.
The win advances Central Catholic (13-1) to the PIAA championship game for the second time, and first since 1988. The Vikings will play either Easton (11-1) or North Penn (13-0) in the title game Saturday at 5 p.m. at Hersheypark Stadium.
Jarvis, who rushed for 142 yards on 7 carries, broke a scoreless tie with a 7-yard touchdown run with 1:00 left in the first half. He added touchdown runs of 45 and 13 yards in the third quarter as the Vikings increased their lead to 23-0. Jarvis also returned a punt 58 yards to set up his 13-yard scoring run.
Central Catholic also scored a safety on a blocked punt by Jonathan Scholl, and a 5-yard run by Jesse McLean.
State College was held to 170 yards in total offense, including only 72 yards on the ground.
Triple A
WARREN, Pa. -- Jake Long threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead Pine-Richland to a 37-7 win over Bradford at Warren High School.
The victory earns Pine-Richland (14-0) its first trip to Hershey for the state championship game. The Rams will face either Strath Haven (13-0) or Manheim Central (13-0) in the title game Friday at 7 p.m. at Hersheypark Stadium.
Long, a junior transfer who started at Bradford last season, completed 7 of 16 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
He connected with Neil Walker on a 9-yard touchdown pass to give the Rams their first points in the first quarter. He also scored on a 1-yard sneak and connected with Walker on a 60-yard scoring strike in the second quarter.
Pine-Richland also scored on a 1-yard run by Greg Hough and a fumble recovery in the end zone by Tom Cannon. Hough rushed for 121 yards on 17 carries.
Bradford (10-3) opened the scoring with an 89-yard run by Sean Hvizdzak with 9:24 left in the first quarter, but did not score again. Hvizdzak finished with 102 yards on 11 carries.
