Needed: Items for kids
YOUNGSTOWN -- Millcreek Children's Center and the Youngstown Community School Inc. are seeking donations of books, computers and other items. Clothing for children ages 3 to 12 also is needed.
YCS is a state-funded charter/community school established in September 1998; it serves about 288 at-risk pupils in kindergarten through fifth grade living in Youngstown; MCC opened in 1976 and serves about 60 Youngstown preschool children ages 3 and 4. Recently a billboard near YCS was donated by Lamar Advertising Co.

Cosmetology course
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Penn State Cosmetology Academy is seeking to fill openings for a nine-month cosmetology course, as well as a three-month class in cosmetology education, both beginning Jan. 26. The academy provides training for nail technicians, estheticians and pedicurists.

Westminster awards
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College alumni who are educators have the opportunity to nominate students for 75 newly created Jerb Miller Scholarships. The scholarships are four-year $9,000-per-year renewable awards created in honor of Dr. Jerb Miller, a professor of education at Westminster from 1968 until his death in 1992.

School/business partners
WASHINGTON -- Six exemplary partnership programs will be awarded $10,000 each in this inaugural year of the National School and Business Partnerships Award, created by the Council for Corporate and School Partnerships.
Founded by The Coca-Cola Company in 2001, the council seeks partnerships between business and kindergarten through 12th-grade public schools or school districts. Application deadline is Jan. 29. Visit www.corpschoolpartners.org.
ExploraVision Awards
Students in kindergarten through grade 12 can compete in the Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Awards program by imagining what technology will be like in 20 years. Students participate in teams in four grade-level categories in six regions of the United States and Canada. Regional winners receive digital cameras, and their schools win a laptop computer and software. Eight finalists go to Washington, D.C., to compete for a $10,000 savings bond.

Interlochen Arts Camp
INTERLOCHEN, Mich. -- High school musicians are invited to apply for the Emerson Scholarship Award for an eight-week summer program at the Interlochen Arts Camp. Fifty-two students from the United States and Puerto Rico will receive the full $5,250 scholarship, which will provide tuition, private music lessons and room-and-board expenses for the June 20 through Aug. 16 camp.
Students in grades nine through 12 who show exceptional proficiency on the harp, string, wind or percussion instruments can apply. An audition on tape or compact disc is required. Deadline is Feb. 15.

Piano/Oho 2004
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland International Piano Competition opens its Piano/Ohio 2004 competition to Ohio piano students in grades nine through 12. Six qualifying rounds will be in March and April at various locations in Northeast Ohio, and 12 semifinalists will perform at The Cleveland Museum of Art on May 1. Six finalists will perform May 2 at CMA. All participants receive various prizes, and the first-place winner takes home $500.
A $15 fee is required for applications, as are parental approval and a piano teacher's signature. Deadline is Feb. 1. Call (216) 707-5397.
History Day contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University hosts the district four "Exploration, Encounter, Exchange In History" National History Day contest 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 3. About 600 students in grades six through 12 are expected to compete for advancement to state finals in Columbus and national finals at the University of Maryland.

Milk Mustache Awards
The got milk?/Milk Mustache campaign, along with USA Today, will award 25 high school senior athletes Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Awards. SAMMY winners will receive a $7,500 scholarship, a spot in the SAMMY Hall of Fame, a trip to an awards ceremony at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and an ad that will run in USA Today in June 2004. Selection is based on academics, athletics, leadership and community service as well as a short essay on how milk is part of the applicant's life and training regimen.

Champions in Education
Midwest Living Magazine has teamed with Olympic champion Jackie Joyner-Kersee to launch the Champions in Education program to recognize those who are making a positive difference in schools through programs such as tutoring, mentoring, after-school programs, fund raising, community partnerships and exposure to the arts.
The program will present a total of $30,000 to 32 winning schools in the fall of 2004, including a special $5,000 "Parent Who Makes a Difference" Award from corporate sponsor Ford Freestar.
