DIVISION VI FOOTBALL Maag lifts Col. Grove to victory

The running back tied state records for rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns.
CANTON (AP) -- Blaine Maag ran for three touchdowns and 287 yards to lead Columbus Grove to a 28-26 win over Maria Stein Marion Local in the Division VI championship game on Saturday.
Maag, the Division VI offensive player of the year, tied records set for most touchdowns rushing and most touchdowns by an individual but missed the division playoff record for rushing yards. That record of 295 was set by Delphos St. John's Chad Schulte in 1998.
The top-ranked Bulldogs (15-0) had an 18-play series with two fourth down conversions and ran down the final 8:13 of the game to top off an undefeated season.
Scott Garman and Andy Schulze scored two touchdowns each for Marion Local.
Staying close
The Flyers (11-4) tried to make a comeback in the second half, scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter.
With 8:58 left in the third, quarterback Cory Luebke found Schulze in the endzone to cut Columbus Grove's lead to 21-13.
The Bulldogs answered less than a minute later with a touchdown on Maag's 56-yard run.
With 6:10 left in the quarter, Luebke hooked up with Schulze for a 9-yard touchdown pass.
Instead of going for a 2-point conversion that could have made the score 28-21, Doug Giere's kick attempt failed. Garman had a 1-yard run for the Flyers for the game's final score.
Columbus Grove scored on its first drive of the game, when Blaine Maag ran for 15 yards behind a block by Brandon Brubaker.
