DIVISION IV FOOTBALL Versailles downs Cleveland VASJ

Ben Shappie scored three touchdowns to lead the Tigers to their sixth title.
MASSILLON (AP) -- Ben Shappie scored two of his three touchdowns 12 seconds apart in the second quarter, leading No. 1 Versailles to a 26-0 win over Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph and the Division IV state championship on Saturday.
The Tigers (15-0) got two touchdowns off turnovers forced by a defense that allowed the Vikings (10-5) across midfield only twice.
Kyle Gehle sealed the Tigers' sixth championship and first since 1998 with an 81-yard punt return -- the longest for a touchdown in state finals history -- early in the fourth quarter. Gehle, a safety and quarterback, also threw a TD pass.
Shappie scored on a 2-yard run 36 seconds before halftime, and Versailles got the ball back when CJ Kostranchuk fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the VASJ 27-yard line.
Versailles' Ryan McNeilan, making up for an earlier roughing penalty that prolonged a VASJ drive, knocked the ball from Kostranchuk and Joe Luthman recovered the fumble.
Breaking it open
Shappie, a first-team All-Ohio selection, caught a touchdown pass from Gehle on the next play, breaking free in the end zone when Vikings cornerback Anthony Ramos slipped and fell.
Shappie added a 20-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter about four minutes after Gehle's return.
Ramos helped set up Shappie's first touchdown with a pass interference penalty on third-and-9 at the VASJ 20. Shappie was breaking for the left corner of the end zone when Ramos tripped him at the 5-yard line, giving Versailles a first down at the 10.
Shappie's touchdown run capped a 16-play, 72-yard drive that took 6:57 off the clock following Eric Strausbaugh's interception.
Versailles defensive end Kevin Paulus, a first-team all-Ohioan, tipped Michael Cvelbar's pass at the line of scrimmage, and Strausbaugh leaped to grab the pick.
Cvelbar had just given VASJ its best field position of the first half with a 16-yard run to the Versailles' 25. That came one play after McNeilan roughed the punter, giving the Vikings a first down.
VASJ won its only state title in 1989.
