EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Shannon Brown had 12 points off the bench, including three spectacular dunks on his 18th birthday, to help No. 3 Michigan State beat Penn 77-52 Saturday in the first game of the Coca-Cola Spartan Classic.
Kelvin Torbert had 15 points at power forward, a new position, and Chris Hill added 13, all in the final 21 minutes for Michigan State (2-1). But the bench was just as important in pulling away from the Quakers (1-2).
Brown was the best player on the court with 6-for-10 shooting from the field and five rebounds, while Delco Rowley and Tim Bograkos supplied a lift for the slow-starting Spartans.
Michigan State fell behind early, just as it did in Tuesday's 81-74 loss at No. 6 Kansas. That changed when Brown energized his team and the crowd with slams reminiscent of the 1979 national champions.
It was the schools' first meeting in 25 seasons, when the Spartans slammed Penn 101-67 in a Final Four semifinal in Salt Lake City. In the second game of the two-day event, DePaul played Indiana State in another rematch from 25 seasons ago.
The Quakers' Tim Begley led all scorers with 17 points. But after missing its first seven shots, Michigan State gradually took over, led 32-23 at halftime and pulled away behind .643 shooting from the field in the second half.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Greg Brunner scored a career-high 26 points, and Pierre Pierce made a free throw with 9.2 seconds left in overtime in Iowa's upset.
The Cardinals shot poorly and their pressure defense was effective only occasionally against the Hawkeyes (3-0), who got 22 points from Brody Boyd.
Louisville was led by Luke Whitehead with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Francisco Garcia scored 17 points, and Taquan Dean 15.
Iowa used a 13-3 run to take a 48-43 lead midway through the second half. The Hawkeyes led by as much as 55-47 before the Cardinals rallied with nine straight points to retake the lead 56-55 with 6:18 to go.
But Iowa answered with its own 7-0 run to make it 62-56 with 31/2 minutes left.

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Mohamed Hachad scored 14 points and T.J. Parker added 13 for Northwestern.
Northwestern trailed 19-10 midway through the first half, but responded with a 16-5 run, taking a 25-24 lead on a Parker 3 with 1:44 left in the first half.
Northwestern hit three consecutive 3s to break open the game late in the second half. Hachad had two of them and Vince Scott hit a three-pointer to give Northwestern a 65-50 lead with 4:36 left in the game.

Jermaine Wallace led Northwestern State (1-3) with 15 points and Jermaine Spencer added 13.
Indiana 80, Xavier 77, OT
INDIANAPOLIS -- Bracey Wright scored eight of his 27 points in overtime, including a go-ahead three-point play with 35.3 seconds left, to rally Indiana.
Wright shot 9-for-18 from the field and had seven rebounds and three assists to lead the Hoosiers (2-1), who won in their first Wooden Tradition appearance.
Xavier (3-2) lost its second straight despite leading for all but 51 seconds of the final nine minutes.
