AREA Westminster cruises past Emory University in Invitational

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Westminster College women's basketball team had four players score in double figures, including three off the bench, as the Titans posted a 73-59 victory over Emory University in the opening round of the Thomas More College Invitational Saturday.
The Titans (2-2) will meet Thomas More (3-0) today at 3 p.m. for the tournament title.
Westminster never trailed, taking a 29-23 lead into halftime before outscoring the Eagles 44-36 in the second half.
Keying the victory was the play of the Westminster reserves who combined to outscore the Emory reserves 34-5.
Westminster was led by junior guard Alyson Gasper who posted career-high totals of 15 points and nine assists while adding a team-high five steals.
Gasper also grabbed nine rebounds.
Coming off the bench to add double-digit scoring totals were freshman guards Nicole Fee (Neshannock High School) with 13 points and Desiree Sterling (Newton Falls High) with 11 points.
Junior reserve guard Erin Morrow added a season-best 10 points.
Junior forward Erica Tallo snared a game-high 13 rebounds for the Titans.
Emory had three players reach double figures in scoring, led by Stephanie Seibert with 16 pointers.
Staten Island 64, Thiel 42
PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Jacclyn Rock shot 10-for-15 from the field and scored 23 points for Staten Island (2-0) in the opening round of the Ramada Inn Tournament.
Thiel (1-3) trailed 30-19 at the half and made just 28 percent (15 of 53) of its shots.
Kerry Gutherie scored 13 points and Adrienne Mowry had 10 more for Thiel.
Men
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Geneva College men's basketball team rode a 20-4 second-half spurt to a 77-72 win over Flagler College in the championship game of the Embry-Riddle Tournament.
It was the second consecutive game the Tornadoes rallied from a double-digit deficit. Geneva (5-3) has won four straight.
Geneva trailed 41-30 at the half and was behind 49-37 with 16:14 remaining.
Over the next 8 minutes the Tornadoes went on a 20-4 run to forge a 57-53 lead which they never relinquished.
Tim Sawyer was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line for Geneva.
He, Stefan Grundberg and Terrance Ward each scored 18 points.
As a team Geneva shot 22-for-26 from the line including eight straight free throws in the final two minutes.
Friday, Geneva used a 16-0 spurt late in the game to beat Embry-Riddle.
Flagler (6-2) was led by Darrell Freeman with 30 points.
Flagler made 51 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes but was outscored 47-31 after the break.
John Carroll 94, Lake Erie 88
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Michael Grogan scored 20 points and was named tournament MVP as John Carroll (4-0) won the Cleveland Cage Classic.
David Gibbons added 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Ryan Dolatowski chipped in with 15 points.
Lake Erie (2-2) was led by Robert Williams with 24 points. The Storm shot 23-for-35 (.657 percent) in the second half after falling behind 50-33 at intermission.
Case Western Reserve 78, Hiram 73
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- CWRU went up 20 points early in the second half then withstood a Hiram rally in the consolation game of the Cleveland Cage Classic.
Funso Lafe scored 20 points to lead Case Western Reserve (1-4).
Hiram (1-3) was paced by A.J. White with 17 points and five assists.
