Ernie Banks never had this in mind when he used to say, "Let's play two."
Easton, which defeated Cumberland Valley 34-20 to reach today's PIAA Class AAAA semifinal game against North Penn, will play two games in three days.
The Rovers played in Phillipsburg, N.J., in the schools' annual Thanksgiving Day game before playing North Penn two days later.
The Easton-North Penn winner will advance to the PIAA Class AAAA championship game on Dec. 6 at Hersheypark Stadium.
"It's going to be tough," Easton coach Steve Shiffert said. "But I think the kids realize that it's the chance of a lifetime."
Breaking through
Bishop Carroll played in the PIAA Class A football semifinals four years ago, and was beaten by District 7 champion South Side Beaver, 53-6.
Two years ago, Bishop Carroll was a 32-6 loser to Rochester, 32-6. Last year, Bishop Carroll lost again in the state semifinals, 21-19 to Rochester.
Bishop Carroll kept getting closer and closer to getting past the District 7 (WPIAL) champion and reaching Hershey, until Friday night when it defeated Springdale 28-20 to earn the sweet trip east.
"This is our best overall team since we started making [the semifinals]," Bishop Carroll coach Craig Sponsky told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette before Friday's game.
"Before, we've had a standout player or two. But the team we put on the field this time is probably the quickest we've had."
Coach absent
Archbishop Ryan claimed the Philadelphia Catholic League soccer championship without its coach present.
Ryan defeated La Salle 1-0 on Saturday for its first Catholic League championship since 1988, but coach George Todt was attending his son's wedding in England.
Todt, who has coached Archbishop Ryan for 35 years, was likely surprised when he found out who scored the winning goal: senior Pat Muldoon, a defender who previously had no goals this season.
"I just wanted to put the ball on net, and hopefully our forwards would do something with it," Muldoon said. "I was really surprised it went into the net. I think it's the first shot I took this season."
Two brothers who were denied eligibility by the District 1 committee were cleared to wrestle by the PIAA.
Dan and Eddie Geib, who wrestled at Souderton High School last year, transferred to Pennridge when their parents changed residences. District 1 officials claimed the brothers' move was in part for athletic intent, a violation of PIAA regulations.
