NHL Devils' undefeated streak is shattered by Stars, 2-0
New Jersey went a team record-tying 13 straight games without a loss.
DALLAS (AP) -- The defending Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils hate losing -- whether it's just a regular-season game in November or a playoff game in June.
The Devils' team record-tying 13-game unbeaten streak was ended by the Dallas Stars with a 2-0 loss Friday night.
"It feels in here like we lost a playoff game," New Jersey's Scott Gomez said. "That's what makes the Devils special. We want to win every game. Most teams would be satisfied, but we're spoiled. We want to get another streak going."
The Devils, 10-0-3 in their previous 13 games, have had three other 13-game unbeaten streaks in franchise history.
New Jersey also had its 15-game regular-season road unbeaten streak come to a halt. The Devils' previous road defeat had been on March 13 before going (9-0-6) away from home during a stretch of 15 games over two seasons.
"It's just a question of doing what we're supposed to do, which is win hockey games, but we didn't talk about it much," Devils coach Pat Burns said of the streak.
The Stars played their best all-around game of what has been a disappointing season so far, and got a strong effort from goaltender Marty Turco.
Turco stopped 21 shots and Bill Guerin had a second-period power play goal as the Stars stretched their season-long winning streak to three games.
"That's the Marty we'd like to see," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "He was confident in an intense, big game."
Turco, the league's regular-season leader in goals-against and save percentage last season, has struggled early. On Nov. 19, he gave up a third-period goal from center ice and two other soft goals in a 3-3 tie with Anaheim.
"It's the kind of game that was a huge statement that we've turned the corner," said Turco, who moved his record to 10-9-3. "We're playing more like a team, with better structure and passion. We've got to get that ingrained into our mentality. The last week or so we've been doing that. Tonight will add to our confidence."
First shutout of year
Turco, who registered his first shutout of the season and 13th of his career, got a break with about two minutes left in the second period when Jeff Friesen's shot hit the post.
Over his last five games, Turco has a save percentage of .951 and a goals-against of 1.20.
In a scoreless game, Guerin skated in hard from the left side and beat Martin Brodeur off a goal-mouth pass from Pierre Turgeon at 10:16 of the second period while New Jersey's Paul Martin was serving a hooking penalty.
Guerin scored his team-high 15th goal of the season to extend his points streak to six games, one short of his career best. Guerin has four goals and four assists during the six-game span.
"He put the pass right on my tape," Guerin said. "I picked it up at the last second, tried to put it on net, and it found a way in."
Insurance goal
Jason Arnott added an insurance goal on a rebound of Guerin's shot with 3:25 to play. Brodeur had made a spectacular save on Guerin before Arnott scored his seventh of the season.
Dallas is 4-1-0 in its last five, recovering from a seven-game winless streak (0-5-2).
"It's a real confidence boost for our team," Tippett said. "We played through some things against a very good team. You've got to hang in there against them because they wait for you to make a mistake."
