INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Greg Brunner scored a career-high 26 points, and Pierre Pierce made a free throw with 9.2 seconds left in overtime in Iowa's 70-69 upset of No. 17 Louisville on Saturday.
The Cardinals shot poorly and their pressure defense was effective only occasionally against the Hawkeyes (3-0), who got 22 points from Brody Boyd.
Louisville was led by Luke Whitehead with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Francisco Garcia scored 17 points, and Taquan Dean 15.
Iowa used a 13-3 run to take a 48-43 lead midway through the second half. The Hawkeyes led by as much as 55-47 before the Cardinals rallied with nine straight points to retake the lead 56-55 with 6:18 to go.
But Iowa answered with its own 7-0 run to make it 62-56 with 3 1/2 minutes left.
Dean's 3-pointer with 53.3 seconds left tied it at 63, and the Hawkeyes had a chance to win it in regulation, but Pierce missed a driving layup.
Iowa opened the overtime with Brunner's two free throws and Boyd's two breakaway layups to make it 69-63. Then Larry O'Bannon hit two 3-pointers to tie the score at 69 with 1:24 left.
The only other point the rest of the way came when Pierce went 1-for-2 from the foul line. Nate Daniels' 15-footer bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.
