STRUTHERS -- The snow and cold didn't keep more than 100 striking Astro Shapes workers from gathering in front of the company to rally for a new contract.
Workers went on strike earlier this month after rejecting the aluminum extruder's offer. They say they are worried about subcontractors taking their jobs if the company's offer is approved.
The rally was as much for the employees as it was for the company, said Tony Sevi, president of United Steelworkers of America Local 9401.
"We're trying to get their spirits up and show this company we mean business," Sevi said before the rally.
Workers, their families and supporters gathered around a large inflatable rat on West Liberty Street.
"We're just looking out for our jobs," said Jarrod Burnelle, a press operator. Burnelle added they want the 50 new employees still on probation who walked out with the other employees to be able to return without repercussions if a settlement is reached.
Additional support
Struthers officials and union leaders from throughout the area came to support the striking workers.
Police were nearby to ensure no one blocked traffic.
City council President-elect Bob Carcelli said he intends to check on tax abatements the city gave to Astro Shapes. He said the abatements were given under the condition that jobs would be created.
"Struthers is losing $6,500 a week in city income tax [because of the strike]. We need to get these people back to work," he said.
Company response
Company officials refused to comment on the rally but put out a written statement. It said the company has surpassed safety, quality and production goals for the month using management, family, friends and some returning employees.
The company contended in the statement that it has proposed greater restrictions on its right to outsource bargaining unit work. The union disagrees.
Sevi has said the company's proposed contract protects job classifications but not individual positions.
"We hope for a quick return of all our striking employees so that the holidays may be brighter for all concerned," the company statement said.
