COSMETICS Weather map will help skin avoid rough spots this winter

Companies offer advice on use of appropriate skin-care products.
NEW YORK (AP) -- The severe weather that is sure to come with winter not only affects road conditions and travel plans, it also affects your skin.
The makers of Eucerin moisturizer and Aquaphor Healing Ointment put together a "weather map" advising people what skin-care products are most appropriate for their region based on weather patterns.
According to their Winter Skindex Map:
UPeople who live in the extreme north of the United States face extreme cold and blustery winds. Skin is best treated with a thick ointment instead of light moisturizer because an ointment promotes healing and soothes cracked skin. The thickness of the formula also creates a barrier between the skin and the elements.
UA swath of states, starting in Washington and moving east to include chunks of the Northwest, Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, usually have cold, dry winters. Creams might work best in these areas because they help seal in moisture. Also, formulas with Alpha Hydroxy will exfoliate the rough patches.
UIn cool areas with fairly low humidity, places such as California, Arizona and New Mexico, a light moisturizing lotion will do the job. It should relieve dry skin without feeling heavy or greasy.
UIn the nation's warmest regions with moderate humidity, including Texas and Louisiana, a light replenishing lotion absorbs quickly but usually is a non-greasy formula that won't clog pores.
