NILES -- Pierrette M. Talley, secretary-treasurer of the Ohio AFL-CIO, will serve as grand marshal for the city's 13th annual Labor Community Parade on Sept. 6.
Marching bands, floats, clubs and more will line up at 8 a.m. on Dragon Drive near McKinley High School. The parade starts at 10 a.m.
The theme is "The Spirit of America Marches On."

ODOT cuts tall grass
AUSTINTOWN -- The state has cut tall grass that was the subject of a nuisance citation issued by township trustees.
The grass on the north side of the Mahoning Avenue/state Route 11 interchange was cut as of this morning. Trustees issued a citation Monday stating that the grass was taller than a foot and had to be cut by the Ohio Department of Transportation in seven days.
If the grass hadn't been cut by ODOT, the township would have cut the grass and billed the state for the work.
Reservists to return
VIENNA -- Some 20 reservists from the 910th Airlift Wing's Aircraft Maintenance Squadron were scheduled to be reunited with family and friends at 1 p.m. today when they arrived home at Youngstown Air Reserve Station coming from Ramstein Air Base, Germany.
The Air Force reservists were deployed to Germany in early March in support of Operation Joint Forge, which is part of a NATO-led peacekeeping effort in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Paving contract OK'd
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners approved a $1.7 million contract Thursday with the Shelly Company of Twinsburg for the county's annual road paving program.
Five bridges will be improved and portions of 17 roads will be resurfaced. Each of the county's 14 townships will have at least one road improved in the project, said county Engineer Richard Marsico.
McKinley site's new hours
NILES -- The McKinley Birthplace Home and Research Center, 40 S. Main St., will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Labor Day, and then on weekends only beginning Sept. 6.
Weekend hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Call Linda L. McGinnis at (330) 652-1704, Ext. 202, to schedule group tours.
Campus police arrest 2
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Youngstown State University students seen walking near Fifth Avenue were arrested Thursday evening by campus police on charges of underage possession of alcohol and both were issued citations charging them with having an open container. Christopher K. Dorris, 19, of Newton Falls Road, Ravenna, and Zachary T. Hall, 20, of Ravine Run, Cortland, will be referred to the student disciplinary board, police said.
Death ruled a suicide
LEETONIA -- The Mahoning County Coroner has ruled the shooting death of a 29-year-old Leetonia man a suicide. Chris Orincsak of West Main Street died Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. The shooting occurred Monday evening. Leetonia police Chief John Soldano said the coroner's ruling was based on his own investigation and that of Leetonia police and investigators from the Columbiana County prosecutor's office. Soldano said Orincsak was home when he shot himself with his own handgun.
Charged after struggle
AUSTINTOWN -- Police said they arrested a Youngstown man after a struggle early today Justin Trickett, 29, of South Portland Avenue, Youngstown, is charged by police with resisting arrest, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and driving under suspension. Police said Trickett was pulled over in the parking lot of Compass West apartments about 12:40 a.m. Reports state that when police asked Trickett if he had any weapons, Trickett responded "no, and you better not touch me." Police had to struggle with Trickett to handcuff and arrest him on the driving-under-suspension charge. They said they later found suspected marijuana and a pipe in his pocket.
Police car damaged
AUSTINTOWN -- Police say a Kirk Road woman kicked and cracked a cruiser's rear window while she was being taken to Mahoning County jail Thursday night. Sheryl Barrios, 45, is charged by police with criminal damaging, disorderly conduct-failure to desist, drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said they were called to Barrios' Kirk Road apartment about 10 p.m. to investigate an argument.
Reports state Barrios told police they could search her purse. She then began removing items from her purse, including rolling papers and a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana cigarettes, police said.
Police said Barrios struggled when they tried to arrest her.
