HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW Friday football

LAKE (1-0) vs. CHANEY (0-1)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium.
Last meeting: Lake won 13-6 last season.
Notebook: The Cowboys carried a 14-13 lead into the fourth quarter against Fitch, but ran out of gas down the stretch to lose 27-14. Chaney quarterback Justin Hood scored both touchdowns in the loss. The Blue Streaks, who beat Boardman 21-7, don't have quite as much depth as the Falcons, but will be another strong test for Chaney. Lake lost its top player, Dan Beachy, to an ACL injury before the Boardman game, but found replacement at running back in A.J. Workman, who had 149 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys will need to use their speed to stop the bigger Blue Streaks from controlling the tempo. Playing at home -- and on turf -- should benefit Chaney.
URSULINE (0-1) vs. STEUBENVILLE (1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Harding Stadium.
Last meeting: Steubenville won 8-0 in the 1984 Div. II regional final.
Notebook: The Irish came up short in a 37-28 loss to Lakewood St. Edward, but showed they're a playoff-caliber team -- as long as they can survive their schedule. Quarterback Daryll Clark -- a Division I college prospect -- completed 24 of 34 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Irish. He also ran 14 times for 33 yards. Ursuline's main offensive threats are running back James Allen and wideouts Derrick Stewart and Walt Lacey. Nate Hubbard ran for 146 yards and a touchdown in Big Red's 31-0 win over Cleveland JFK. Quarterback Steve Repella was 3 of 7 for 47 yards and a touchdown.
If you go: Take Rt. 11 south and merge onto Rt. 7. Then take Rt. 22 to the University Blvd. exit and turn right. Merge onto Brady Avenue, then make a slight right on Calvin Jones Way.
MOONEY (1-0)vs. ST. THOMAS AQUINAS (1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Canton Central Catholic.
Last meeting: Mooney won 49-0 in 1996.
Notebook: It's official -- Mooney is back. The Cardinals blasted East Liverpool 40-0 on Saturday, scoring 26 points in the second quarter, snapping a two-game losing streak to the Potters. Quarterback Ron Stoops was 6 of 9 for 102 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and Mooney's defense held East Liverpool to 87 yards. Dennis Underwood ran for 146 yards and three touchdowns to lead Aquinas past Akron Springfield 44-28. Quarterback Jason Chessler was 6 of 12 for 56 yards and a touchdown as the Knights opened a 34-7 lead in the third quarter.
If you go: Take I-76 west to I-77 south, exit at Tuscarawas Street and turn right. School is on the left.
FITCH (1-0)vs. MASSILLON JACKSON (1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Jackson Middle School.
Last meeting: Fitch won 28-7 last year.
Notebook: Miles Williams ran for 100 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Fitch past Chaney. The Falcons' defense shut down the Cowboys in the fourth quarter as Fitch held a 104-4 edge in yardage. Quarterback John Mang threw for a touchdown and ran for another as Fitch showed good offensive balance. Kyle Calvert ran for 144 yards and a touchdown as Jackson defeated Cuyahoga Falls 28-10. Nathan Michel added 72 yards and a touchdown for the Polar Bears, who have beaten Fitch three of the last four years. Fitch coach Neal Kopp, who was suspended for last week's game, will make his head coaching debut.
If you go: Take I-76 west to I-77 south, exit at Portage Street and turn right (west). Turn left on Rt. 241 (Wales) and turn right on Mudbrook Street. Traffic is always bad, so plan to leave early.
WEST BRANCH (0-1) vs. CANFIELD (1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
Last meeting: Canfield won 25-13 last year.
Notebook: Canfield senior John Virostko had two interceptions, a fumble recovery, 11 tackles and caught a touchdown pass to lead the Cardinals past Rayen, 12-0. Quarterback Jamie McNally added 137 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Cardinals, who should still be tough this season despite heavy losses to graduation. West Branch quarterback Bobby Swallow had three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to salvage Steve Saulnier's head coaching debut in a 28-20 loss to Southeast.
HOWLAND (0-1) vs. GIRARD (1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Arrowhead Stadium.Last meeting: Howland won 14-12 last year.Notebook: Cleveland Benedictine showed why it's considered the best team in the Cleveland area by dropping Howland 31-3. But the Tigers played well in the first half and will look to running back Tony Davis and quarterback Brad Lockney to help them rebound. The Tigers were one of the few teams to slow Girard's offense last season and were the only team to beat them in the regular season. Quarterback Matt Zuppo, a two-year starter, hit 23 of 33 passes for 346 yards and a touchdown to lead Girard past Niles 34-14. Both teams have made the playoffs the past two seasons.
WARREN JFK (1-0) vs. STRUTHERS (1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Struthers Stadium.
Last meeting: Kennedy won 21-18 in 1994.
Notebook: Quarterback Tim Zetts hit 12 of 24 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown to help Struthers rally past Liberty, 20-16. Tight end Jed Hill (Penn State) and offensive lineman Justin Decker lead a talented Wildcats team that may struggle with depth. Running back Anthony Ambeliotis had 134 yards rushing and quarterback John DiFiore threw for 190 yards and a touchdown as Warren JFK beat Newton Falls 24-14. Speedy wideout Shane Golden, who had two touchdown receptions against the Tigers, could cause problems for the Wildcats.
