GIRARD Pupils in grades 5-12 to study river

GIRARD -- The school board has approved using a $4,785 grant from Dominion East Ohio Gas for pupils in grades five through 12 to study the Mahoning River Project this school year.
Girard is one of about 10 area school districts studying aspects of the Mahoning River. Science pupils conduct water and soil tests, and social studies pupils investigate how the river affected early settlement and industry in the Valley.
Meeting Wednesday, the board also accepted a grant of $14,000 for the High Schools That Work Program.
Now in its fourth year, the program helps pupils improve their state proficiency test scores in all subjects, but particularly in math.
It was noted that Marilyn E. Kobal and Gloria M. Garber, secretaries at the intermediate and junior high schools, respectively, have retired after 36 years of service each.
The board reminded parents that the city's schools will open one week later than scheduled because of a malfunctioning transformer in the recently remodeled Prospect Elementary School. A new transformer has been ordered.
Classes are set to begin Sept. 9.
