MERCER COUNTY Officials decide to cancel spraying
STONEBORO, Pa. -- Spraying to kill adult mosquitoes at the Stoneboro Fairgrounds in Mercer County has been canceled.
The state Department of Environmental Protection announced last week that mosquito sampling at the fairgrounds along U.S. Route 62 showed an abnormally high number of adult mosquitoes that could carry the West Nile virus.
The state said it would spray Tuesday or today to kill the insects, using a pesticide that wouldn't harm humans or animals.
However, new testing done Monday night showed that the mosquito population there is much lower than anticipated, low enough that a spraying operation is no longer necessary, said Kelly Burch, DEP's Northwest regional director.
Today is also the day that The Great Stoneboro Fair, which draws crowds of up to 50,000 people during its six-day run, opens at the fairgrounds.
Mercer County has had one case one case of West Nile virus in a human this season, an 11-year-old girl who has been treated and has recovered. The disease has also shown up in a horse, some chickens, a crow and one mosquito sampling, according to the state Department of Health.
Neighboring Lawrence County had one human case, a 75-year-old man who recovered, and one crow with the disease.
