Notable players: Mooney RB Ted Bell ran for over 100 yards in 11 of the 12 games (WWR held him to 96 yards in Week 6). Bell, Bob Sammartino and Jody McCulloh went to play at Michigan State. Fullback Dave Handel ran for 681 yards and five touchdowns. QB Dave Lockshaw was first team All-Ohio as a DB. Bell, Lockshaw, Kevin Tomasko, Mark Malie, Brian Cicuto and Mike Loydn were first team All-SVC.Notebook: This was the first of four state titles for Mooney -- the most of any area team. Bell injured his knee in the fourth quarter of the title game and never fully recovered. Mooney snapped Reserve's 28-game winning streak. This was the only high school loss for Raider coach Joe Novak, who went 23-1 over two years at Reserve and won the 1972 Class AAA state championship -- the first year for the state playoffs. The title game, which was played at the Akron Rubber Bowl, ranks second all-time in state final attendance (29,720), trailing only a Division I/III doubleheader in 1982, which had 31,409. Myke Clarett, father of Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett, was a freshman at Mooney.
