SHARON Intersection will be closed as state reinforces road

The state will replace the damaged middle of the intersection with concrete.
SHARON, Pa. -- The intersection of Dock Street and Connelly Boulevard will be closed for three days as the state digs up and replaces the center of that busy crossroads.
The city thought it would have to pay to rebuild the entire intersection at a cost as high as $200,000. Mayor David O. Ryan, though, said the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has agreed to pay for a lesser project on the road, damaged by heavy trucks making turns onto and off of Dock Street.
Ryan said Monday that the state will do the work on Sept. 8, 9 and 10, but it will require that the intersection be closed.
The state will cut a 30-foot-by-60-foot hole in the middle of the intersection and fill it with reinforced concrete that can stand up better to steel-laden trucks.
Ryan said PennDOT has estimated the cost at between $9,000 and $11,000.
Traffic control
The city will supply two police officers to help with traffic control as needed and there will be a detour, particularly for trucks, Ryan said.
PennDOT will place two electronic message boards (one on Connelly near Sharon Cycle Sales and the other on Dock Street several hundred yards south of the intersection) Tuesday to alert motorists about the impending work, Ryan said.
The city will notify local trucking companies as well as Duferco Farrell Corp., which ships steel coils to Winner Steel Services in Sharon along that route.
