SCRAPPERS NOTEBOOK From Cafaro Field
Game recap: With their victory Monday, the Scrappers (34-33) have won three straight games and six of their last seven to continue their strong season-ending play. Left-hander Roger Lincoln improved his record to 3-0 by allowing two runs on four hits through five innings. The Scrappers have been using Lincoln as a reliever and spot starter. He's getting accustomed to the role. "The biggest thing I've found is it's a mental adjustment," said Lincoln, a first-year player from Stetson University. "They tell me in advance when I'm going to start, so I'm able to prepare myself. I'm just making the most out of it. I love playing, I love pitching." Trailing 2-0, the Scrappers scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning by batting around and knocking Jamestown starter Carl Primus out of the game. Scrappers second baseman Anthony Lunetta went 3-for-4 with a double.
Roster addition: The Scrappers have added left-handed pitcher Dan Cevette to their roster. A second-year professional, Cevette was promoted from Rookie League Burlington, where he was 2-5 in 13 starts with a 3.45 ERA. Cevette was a third-round draft pick in 2002 by the Indians. He is expected to make his first start for Mahoning Valley Wednesday in Auburn.
Minor issue: The Indians traded left-handed starting pitcher Brian Anderson to the Kansas City Royals on Monday for two 23-year-old minor leaguers -- outfielder Trey Dyson and right-hander Kieran Mattison, who are playing at High-A ball. "They're gathering young players," Scrappers manager Ted Kubiak said. "What they're doing is good up there. They're on the right path. They must have gotten some guys they've really wanted. They're making the right choices, it seems to me." The vacant spot in the Indians' starting rotation now could go to right-hander Chad Durbin, who started the season at Mahoning Valley following elbow surgery.
Triple threat: Auburn first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti is closing in on the New York-Penn League's triple crown. Going into Monday's game, he led the league in batting average (.350), home runs (10) and RBIs (58). The Doubledays have clinched the Pinckney Division crown.
Win tickets: Greg Gania, voice of the Scrappers for WNIO-AM (1390), is asking fans to submit questions for the "Ted Kubiak Show," which airs before the game. The fan whose question is selected and read on the air will receive two free tickets to an upcoming Scrappers game.
Upcoming schedule: The Scrappers will finish their homestand tonight against Jamestown. Juan Lara (2-3, 3.59) takes the mound against Chris Pillsbury (1-3, 4.70). Tonight's promotion is a Lunch Bag Giveaway. The first 1,000 fans age 14 and under will receive a complimentary lunch bag. After the game, Mahoning Valley goes back on the road for five games -- to Auburn and Aberdeen -- before finishing the season with three home games against Jamestown on Sept. 1-3.
