OLYMPICS Canadians surrender in USA rout

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Canada didn't come here to beat the United States, so it didn't even try.
In what amounted to an international basketball surrender, Canada coach Jay Triano kept NBA All-Star Steve Nash on the bench for the final three quarters as the United States defeated its northern neighbor 111-71 on Monday night.
Allen Iverson made seven 3-pointers in the third quarter and finished with 28 points, but his performance was overshadowed by the noncompetitive nature of the second-round game at the Tournament of the Americas.
"Hopefully we'll have five games in the next six days, and I'm going to need him to play lots of minutes," Triano said of Nash. "I didn't want to play him 38 minutes and lose by five or six and have everyone pat us on the back saying you competed real well, and then have him not be able to compete against Brazil [today]."
Nash had five assists, including several on alley-oop dunks, as Canada led 28-21 at the end of the first quarter. Canada pulled to 63-50 with 5:40 remaining in the third quarter, which somehow prompted Triano to remove his leading scorer, Rowan Barrett.
The U.S. team, playing without leading scorer Tracy McGrady (sprained back), outscored Canada 30-11 in the second quarter to take control for good.
Next up for the Americans is today's game against Argentina.
