Motorcyclists to hail law repeal with helmet-smashing ceremony
SHARON, Pa. -- Quaker Steak & amp; Lube, noted for its weekly bike nights that attract thousands of motorcyclists, will have a helmet-smashing ceremony Wednesday to mark the repeal of Pennsylvania's motorcycle helmet law Thursday.
It's being billed as "Freedom to Choose Bike Nite," and the helmet smashing is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. in the Quaker Steak lot at Connelly Boulevard and Chestnut Avenue.
There will also be a bike trailer giveaway at 9 p.m., sponsored by Leonard's Truck-n-Trailer.
The Pennsylvania legislature passed the repeal several months ago, and it has been signed into law.
Although helmets will now be optional, there are still some limitations, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
First, operators must be at least 21 years of age and have successfully completed a state-approved motorcycle safety course or have had a motorcycle license for at least two years before they can ride without a helmet.
Second, passengers of exempted operators fitting the first category can also ride without a helmet, if they are at least 21 years of age.
The only operators who can ride without helmets and none of the above restrictions are those operating or riding on a three-wheeled cycle with an enclosed cab.
