Fashion and beauty are like teenage lovers. They can't take their eyes off each other; every waking moment is spent in contemplation and wonder; they might even start thinking alike. In short, they're inseparable.
So what does that say when beauty tries to keep up with fashion's penchant to dart off in different directions? If makeup looks are supposed to harmonize with clothing trends, then how can the beauty counter possibly keep up with the many messages from the runways?
The short answer is simple: Teenage lovers can sometimes grow out of sync.
This fall, however, the beauty message is easy to follow. The major trends for makeup neatly mirror the season's reigning fashion trends. It doesn't always happen this way. But when it does, it makes coordinating makeup with fall outfits easier and much more exciting.
Top trends
So what are the top makeup trends? Mod. Hollywood glam. Romantic seductress. These looks go hand-in-hand with the fashion directions for fall. These are the top looks:
UGroovy girl: Everywhere you look, makeup counters will be directing you to a modified Mod look. Think of the swinging '60s, with straight bangs, dark eyes, shimmering eye shadow and pale lips.
"Mod is definitely the big trend for fall," said Danielle Pergament, senior editor for Allure magazine. Think dark eyes (with Brigitte Bardot eyeliner and mascara), said Allison Schwartz, beauty editor for Glamour magazine. Lips are paler, with a subtle sheen, Schwartz added.
White, beige and taupe eye shadow with a slightly metallic or powdery veil complete the look. Don't worry about the white eye shadow dating you in an unflattering manner. "The makeup formulas aren't as opaque and chalky as they were 40 years ago," Pergament said.
USexy sirens: The movie-star treatment -- Lana Turner, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo and Rita Hayworth spring to mind -- is another big message for fall.
"It's about glamour, but in a modern, relaxed sense," said Poppy King, color designer for Prescriptives. "It's about the golden years of Hollywood, with a flare for breaking the rules, but not in an anti-fashion sense. This fall it's all about 'in your face' rebellious glamour."
And it follows fashion. "The most sophisticated themes to hit the fall runway were silhouettes inspired by the mysteriously seductive film heroines of the 1930s and the glamorous starlets of the 1940s," said celebrity fashion stylist Stefan Campbell for Clinique. "The look this fall is true elegance with seductive undertones."
Red lips are the No. 1 direction in the Hollywood glam lane. "The red lip is back. It's total glamour, old Hollywood, Grace Kelly," Schwartz said. "It's got a satiny sheen to it; not glossy."
Pergament agrees. "You see red lips almost every fall. This time around, it is much more approachable," she said. "The red is almost like a stain. It's not a perfectly precise, flawless line. But it's a true red."
USmoldering eyes: Drama, especially with rich, velvety shades, is clearly focused on the eyes. Fashion's return to glamour means eye makeup that is deep, smoky and infused with jewel tones.
"This is makeup that a woman dresses up for. It's very tactile; it looks and feels luxurious," Linda Cantello, artistic adviser for makeup for Yves Saint Laurent, said of the company's fall/winter collection, inspired by Tom Ford's feminine runway looks. "Color this strong works beautifully for fall."
Dark eyes were on the runways for Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Michael Kors as well as YSL, Pergament said. "We saw dark eyes and pale lips. Charcoal eye shadow with a slight silvery sheen," she said. "It's very smoky. Maybe a softer side of Gothic."
UThe new romantics: While the true red lip can be seen almost across the beauty board, there is a fall trend that calls for a more minimalist beauty, including light foundation, pale eye shadows, soft pink cheeks and nude lips. That message is evident in the Bobbi Brown palette for fall.
"Nudes are universally flattering and incredibly sexy because they enhance a woman's true beauty and really let it show through," Brown said in her trend report. "This season's shades blend seamlessly with skin, making it easier than ever to create a polished look that's warm, creamy and totally nude."
At Sue Devitt Studio cosmetics, the eye is dramatically intensified, which means the lips need to be toned down. "Since the eyes are really the focus of the face for fall, keep lips neutral," Devitt said.
