YOUNGSTOWN -- Enrollment is up again at Youngstown State University. The university recorded 12,789 students on campus as of the end of the first day of fall semester classes on Monday, according to preliminary enrollment counts released by YSU officials today.
That's an increase of 94 students from the 12,695 recorded on the same day last year. It is the third consecutive fall semester enrollment increase, after more than a decade of declines.
Enrollment has increased by 781 students, or 6.5 percent, since fall 2000, when the total number of students on the first day of classes was 12,008.
Official enrollment numbers will be reported to the Ohio Board of Regents on Sept. 8, the 14th day of classes.
Burglar steals carfrom street department
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone smashed out a window at the city street department on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard -- leaving a handprint on the broken glass -- and stole a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass that had been parked inside the building, police said. The break-in was discovered at 1:53 a.m. today. The car was driven through the garage bay door. An inventory was expected to be done today to determine if anything else is missing.
Canfield Show of Bands
CANFIELD -- The Canfield Show of Bands will be at 7:30 tonight at Canfield High School, 100 Cardinal Drive. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for students and seniors, and children 5 and under get in free.
South Side drug arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tyrell E. Oliver, 24, of West Myrtle Avenue was arraigned Monday in municipal court on charges of possession of crack cocaine, possession of marijuana and failure to comply with a police order. Judge Robert P. Milich set bonds that total $54,000. Oliver will be back in court Tuesday. A deputy U.S. marshal, along with Mahoning County deputy sheriffs, pursued Oliver's Lexus Saturday evening on the South Side when they noticed it was missing a light for the license plate. Oliver didn't stop on Willis Avenue until boxed in by deputies, reports show. Some of the cocaine was tossed as Oliver drove and the marijuana was found in his pants, police said.
Victim advocate cited
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lisa Knight, a victim advocate for the city, was issued citations Monday charging her with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Police said Knight, 43, of Gladstone Street refused several orders by an assistant city prosecutor to be quiet in the hall outside the municipal courts. An officer said he intervened and told her to be quiet or leave but she failed to comply.
Concert rescheduled
NORTH LIMA -- The Great Pretenders concert, which was postponed earlier this summer because of rain, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Woodworth Park in Beaver Township.
The concert is part of the park's summer concert series. Admission is free.
Innocent plea given
YOUNGSTOWN -- Karl Kridler, 26, of Wakefield Street, who gave police his brother Kevin's name when arrested at the New Affair Lounge on East Midlothian Boulevard, pleaded innocent at arraignment Monday in municipal court on charges of disorderly conduct and falsification.
Police said Kridler had complained about not receiving change from a lap dancer at 2:15 a.m. Saturday at the South Side bar and was told several times to leave but returned and was disruptive. Judge Robert P. Milich set bond at $2,000. Kridler will be back in court Sept. 18.
Child endangering arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- LaToya Baggley, 19, of Hudson Avenue was arrested Monday on a warrant issued last week charging her with child endangering. Baggley is accused of leaving her 2-year-old son without a baby sitter at a house on Stiles Avenue where a fire broke out at 3:20 a.m. Friday. Baggley was expected to be arraigned today in municipal court. The resident of the house on Stiles, Natasha Shuler, 24, was arraigned last week on four counts of child endangering and will be back in court Sept. 16. She, too, was not home when the fire started in a bedroom. The charges cover her three children, ages 4, 5 and 11 and Baggley's 2-year-old. There were no injuries.
