YOUNGSTOWN -- The crowded ballot for the Youngstown Board of Education has gotten thinner.
The Mahoning County Board of Elections disqualified four of the 17 candidates Monday who filed last week to run. There are four seats up for election in November.
Those disqualified for city school board were Denise Jennings, Oliver Weaver, James Boyd and Joe Louis Teague. All were left off the ballot because the board ruled they failed to gather enough valid signatures of registered voters.
The elections board also booted a total of 16 candidates or liquor issues off ballots Tuesday from around the county for a variety of reasons.
In other races
The elections board disqualified other school-board candidates, too:
UTwo Campbell candidates were bumped. Michael Barry failed to date his signature, and Patricia Neely listed a different address on her petition than was on file with the elections board.
UJackie Morley-Novak, a Boardman candidate, fell three valid signatures short and had a problem with how her name appeared on her petition.
UMichael Sabatine, a Sebring candidate, fell four valid signatures short.
URon Nicolli, an Austintown candidate, signed his petition after collecting signatures, a violation.
The elections board dumped four liquor options from the ballot, all for lack of enough valid signatures:
USelling intoxicating liquors and Sunday sales at the Youngstown Sports Grille, 277 Boardman-Canfield Road.
USelling beer at 7807 Market St.
USelling beer, wine and mixed beverages on Sunday at Route 46 Beer and Wine, 136 N. Canfield Road.
USelling beer and wine at Village Plaza Sparkle, 108 W. County Line Road.
Three township trustee candidates were disqualified from the ballot:
UChris Carver, an Austintown candidate, fell two valid signatures short.
ULori Yanocos-Clark, a Canfield township candidate, had discrepancies on her address. She was disqualified until she can clarify her address.
UJames Brown, a Berlin trustee, failed to sign a petition, leaving him short of valid signatures.
Those dropped from the ballot can appeal their ouster to the board. Candidates and backers of issues can go to court if they don't win their appeals.
