NEW YORK -- Jose Contreras made a rousing return from the disabled list, shutting down Baltimore on three hits over seven innings. Jorge Posada hit a three-run homer off rookie Eric DuBose (1-4) in the first and Derek Jeter added a two-run single for the Yankees. Making his first start at Yankee Stadium, Contreras (4-1) struck out five and walked one.
Athletics 17, Blue Jays 2
TORONTO -- Ramon Hernandez and Miguel Tejada each hit grand slams -- the first time the Athletics have connected for two in their 103-year history. Hernandez hit his second career slam, giving Oakland a 4-0 lead off Kelvim Escobar (9-8) in the first. Tejada's sixth career slam made it 12-2 off Josh Towers in the sixth. McMillon drove in a career-high five runs for the A's, who reached a season high in runs and hits (19). Tim Hudson (13-4), who was scratched Thursday because of a bruised right hand, won his fourth straight start, allowing two unearned runs on six hits in six innings.

CHICAGO -- John Thomson threw a four-hitter to win his fifth straight decision and Hank Blalock hit a two-run homer. Thomson (12-10) didn't allow a runner to reach second until there were two outs in the ninth. He struck out six and walked one. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Chicago.
Twins 8, Royals 1
MINNEAPOLIS -- Johan Santana struck out 10 batters for the second straight game, and Minnesota broke loose after Kevin Appier left in the second inning with an elbow injury. Santana (8-3), who has become the Twins' ace with a 1.25 ERA over five starts in August, tied his season high for strikeouts. He gave up six hits and two walks in six innings, but allowed only one run on Desi Relaford's second-inning homer. Matthew LeCroy had three RBI singles for the Twins, each scoring Shannon Stewart.
Tigers 10, Angels 9
DETROIT -- Brandon Inge hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning off Troy Percival and Detroit ended its 11-game losing streak. Garret Anderson hit his 27th homer and drove in five runs for the Angels. His two-run single in the eighth put Anaheim ahead.
Red Sox 6, Mariners 1
BOSTON -- Derek Lowe pitched 71/3 innings and David Ortiz hit a three-run homer as Boston handed Seattle its fifth consecutive loss. Lowe (13-6) allowed one run on five hits and five walks, striking out four.

Braves 12, Rockies 6
DENVER -- Russ Ortiz posted his major league-leading 18th win and Gary Sheffield homered and drove in three runs. Rafael Furcal, who homered, and Chipper Jones each had four hits and two RBIs for Atlanta. Vinny Castilla also homered as the Braves got 17 hits, one shy of their season high.

HOUSTON -- Richard Hidalgo homered, tripled and hit a go-ahead single for Houston. He drove in three runs and picked up his 20th assist, most among major league outfielders. Jeriome Robertson (12-6) has won all four of his starts against the Reds this season with a 2.42 ERA in those games.

ST. LOUIS -- Brett Tomko pitched scoreless ball into the seventh inning and Scott Rolen had three hits and three defensive stops at third base. Tomko didn't allow a hit until Jimmy Rollins' two-out single in the fifth and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. He gave up five hits with three walks and a strikeout, leaving with the bases loaded again and one out in the seventh.
Marlins 7, Giants 4
SAN FRANCISCO -- Miguel Cabrera and Derrek Lee homered and drove in three runs apiece, and Carl Pavano pitched solid innings as Florida snapped a five-game losing streak. Jeffrey Hammonds, replacing Barry Bonds in left field, went 2-for-4 with two doubles. He also made spectacular catches on consecutive drives in the fourth.
Cubs 5, Diamondbacks 3
PHOENIX -- Randall Simon and Kenny Lofton drove in two runs each and Matt Clement dominated Arizona for seven innings. Clement (11-11) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks, striking out nine, before coming out after giving up a leadoff single to Danny Bautista in the eighth.
Expos 8, Padres 4
SAN DIEGO -- Brad Wilkerson homered and drove in three runs and Jose Vidro added a two-run homer as Montreal broke a four-game losing streak. Wilkerson connected for a two-run drive off Kevin Jarvis (4-6) in the fifth inning as the Expos took a 4-0 lead.
Mets 2, Dodgers 1
LOS ANGELES -- Tom Glavine held Los Angeles to two hits in seven innings as he outpitched Kevin Brown, and New York scored two unearned runs. Glavine (9-11) gave up one run, allowed just an intentional walk and struck out two. Brown (12-7) allowed seven hits in eight innings.
