ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Freshman Maddie Lawther scored the winning goal off a pass from sophomore Katie Deprey to lead YSU past Washington University, 1-0, in a scrimmage Friday.

Girard's Hunkusearns scholarship
GIRARD -- Girard High graduate Tealle Hunkus was awarded the Div. III Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association scholarship for 2003.
Hunkus, a first team all-Ohio selection last season after leading the Indians to their first state tournament berth, will receive $500. She was recently named the 36th-best volleyball player in the country by Student Sports Magazine.
Hunkus, who graduated ninth in her class with a 4.29 grade point average, will be a freshman at Duke this fall.
Coaches hired
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield board of education has hired the following individuals for coaching jobs: Don Darby and Darren Garris, seventh/eighth grade football at $1,266 a year; Kelly Hontula, seventh/eighth grade girls' volleyball coach, $1,899 a year and Dan Miller, eighth grade girls basketball coach, $2,532 a year.
Area coacheswin softball title
TUPELO, Miss. -- Barbara Balestrino, an assistant coach for the Ursuline High girls softball team and Sis Woods of Sebring, the West Branch girls' softball coach, were members of the Lakerettes that won the Women's Major 35 and over National Slopitch softball crown.
The Conneaut Lake, Pa. Lakerettes, with 17 teams entered, topped Tradiers, Tenn. 11-8, Sonoma, Calif. 14-7, Reidel Brothers, Mi. 10-3, Touche' II, La. 9-4, then the Traders again 17-7 for the championship.
Balestrino, who works for the county auditors office and Woods, both batter over .600.
Bocce champs
Lou's Barber Shop won the Arco Club Summer Bocce League title for the second year in a row, beating the Flashers 15-13 and 15-12 in the best-of-three championship series.
Members of the two-time champs are Lou "Chico" Blazquez (sponsor), captain Tom Mericle, Dave Coy, Jack Fusco, Joe Pompeo, Steve Vidman and Paul Zornjak.

NFL approvesnew Redskins owners
ASHBURN, Va. -- NFL owners on Friday approved the sale of approximately 20 percent of the Washington Redskins to three new owners.
FedEx chairman Fred Smith, Northern Virginia real estate developer Dwight Schar and Florida insurance executive Robert Rothman made the purchase, worth about $200 million.
The three shares formerly belonged to real estate developer Mort Zuckerman.
Coyotes sign Tanabe
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Phoenix Coyotes signed defenseman David Tanabe to a multi-year contract on Friday.
Terms were not disclosed.
Tanabe was acquired with Igor Knyazev from Carolina in exchange for Danny Markov and a conditional draft choice in 2005.
The 23-year-old recorded three goals and 10 assists in 68 games with the Hurricanes last season.
He was drafted by Carolina in the first round in 1999.
Valparaiso picks Drewto succeed son
VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Homer Drew is returning to Valparaiso, succeeding his son as men's basketball.
Drew retired 18 months ago as the school's career leader in victories, turning the position over to his son, Scott, who was named coach at Baylor on Friday.
Iowa man chargedafter Bryant threat
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa student was charged with threatening to kill the woman accusing Kobe Bryant of sexual assault.
John William Roche, 22, was arrested Thursday afternoon for allegedly leaving a profanity-laced message on the accuser's answering machine July 27, according to a federal grand jury indictment.
Roche is charged with making a threatening telephone call across state lines. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
